The Nintendo Switch is currently in its fourth year on the market, yet fans should expect to enjoy more handheld/home systems in the future.

Nintendo has split its resources between the handheld and home console markets since the days of the original Game Boy. The problem with this strategy is that it divided the company’s resources, which sometimes left one side of the company supporting the other, as was the case when the 3DS found a fanbase, but the Wii U floundered at the market. Nintendo finally consolidated the two aspects of the business with the release of the Switch in 2017, as the system can be used as both a handheld and home console. The Switch has seen incredible success thanks to this approach, as it still holds up for big game experiences on a TV, while the portable nature of the system makes it the perfect choice for a road trip or for local multiplayer meet-ups.

The question of the Switch’s successor came up during a recent shareholder Q&A that has been transcribed into English and uploaded on Nintendo ‘swebsite. Senior executive officer Ko Shiata fielded a question about the next Nintendo system and how the hybrid style is restricted by hardware limitations. Shiata believes that the hybrid style is here to stay.

In addition to the performance aspects (higher technical specifications), Nintendo’s dedicated video game platforms are developed with a focus on providing a comfortable environment for consumers to play fun software. From the perspective of playing with the image displayed on a TV, we believe that because consumers can play Nintendo Switch on a TV or the game console screen itself, it has greatly increased the opportunities for gameplay in various scenes in their lives, compared to previous consoles. Through Nintendo Switch, we’ve made many discoveries about where a dedicated video game platform can fit into a consumer’s daily life. We see scenes on social media of children and their families sitting around a game console to play, which gives us a renewed sense of the value of our dedicated video game platform. We will utilize these experiences in carefully considering the form our future game consoles will take.

The Switch still has several years worth of content left in it, but it makes sense for Nintendo to be looking ahead. The release of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are on the horizon and are far superior to the Switch in terms of hardware. Third-party developers have managed to port some PlayStation 4/Xbox One titles to the Switch, but it’s unlikely that the same will be possible for games on the upcoming generation of systems.

The hybrid nature of the Switch has captured the imagination of gamers all around the world, especially when it comes to its performance as a portable system. It makes sense for Nintendo to want to capitalize on this aspect of the system, especially as Microsoft and Sony haven’t attempted anything similar with their upcoming consoles.
