Next-gen games on PlayStation 5 will continue to have the option to run at 30fps, and although players may be asking why this is, there is a good reason for it. Consoles have been racing to redefine the future of gaming, and this is true for all consoles launched in the past. The PS4 mostly uses a frame rate of 30fps, with very few games having the option to run at 60fps, and the Xbox One is in the same place. One might assume that 60fps is the obvious next step for the developers to work towards, but a former software engineer explains why this isn’t a feature that the PS5 strives for.

The PS5 will have a 16GB memory, 448GB/s memory bandwidth, 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz CPU, 10.28 TFLOPs, and 36 CUs at 2.23GHz GPU. These are some impressive specs, improving on what even the PS4 Pro has under the hood, and the PS4 Pro can run some games more smoothly than ever before (take Assassin’s Creed 3’s looks in 4K or Battlefield 1’s higher resolution). It has enhanced up-scaling techniques that can increase games’ resolutions, but it can’t do much about the frames per second. As it turns out, neither can the PS5 since its games don’t even allow for this.

A former principal software engineer on the PS5 has given some insight into the constraints that keep the console from running games at 60fps as a standard. On WCCFTECH, Matt Hargett points out in a tweet that the problem is not with the console, but with players’ TVs. He writes that a typical cheap 4K TV can only do 4:2:0 HDR at 4K and 60hz, but can push the HDR to 4:2:2 at 4K and 30hz. Most game developers would rather have their games look good in 4K than have them run at 60fps, and it seems they must sacrifice one or the other. Developers want their games looking “filmic” as Hargett puts it, and want more people to be able to experience their games in sharp detail and bright colors.

The PS5 will be capable of reaching 60fps. It should be able to push the frame rate even higher, but game developers are putting a cap of 30fps on many next-gen games nonetheless. The question that has then been asked is why not have the option to decide between graphics and performance? The TV’s hardware, specifically its receiver hardware processors, would mean a less than optimal HDR which the PS5 can do nothing about.

Many games are therefore only going to run at 30fps, like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, because they are supposed to look more cinematic than the current generation of consoles. Many fans are disappointed with the news that they will not be able to game at a constant 60fps on the PS5, with some gamers saying that they would rather have a faster frame rate than immaculate graphics. Others were expecting next-gen consoles to compete with a PCs performance, saying that they would rather buy a PC than a PS5 if this is the kind of gameplay they will be looking at on consoles. A big selling point for the PS5 would have been both a higher resolution and a faster frame rate, and the lack of even a choice between the two could set the PS5 back quite a bit.
