Blow into the cartridge slot one more time, as EA is bringing back NHL 94 with updated teams and rosters for those who pre-order the upcoming NHL 21. Originally released on SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and DOS computers in 1993, NHL 94 is an institution for longtime fans of EA Sports. It is considered by many to be one of the greatest sports games of all time, introducing visual elements and gameplay mechanics that would go forward for years to come in EA’s hockey simulations.

NHL 94 is so well-loved among franchise fans that this isn’t even the first time the game has been revived in series history. The original game was the base the EA used for its Mutant League Hockey, the ice-based cousin of the more famous Mutant Football League and its own retro revivals. In the PlayStation 2 version of NHL 06, an altered version of the 16-bit game was included as a bonus on the disc. It didn’t feature the licensed teams of the original, but nothing else was changed from the Sega Genesis base the developers were working on. In NHL 14, EA celebrated the 20th anniversary of the release by offering an anniversary mode; it didn’t alter the modern graphics, but it did change the gameplay to a simplistic three-button style that OG fans love.

Now, in 2020, fans once again have an opportunity to experience NHL 94, this time in its most complete form outside of a 90s console. EA Sports NHL announces that it will be included as a pre-order bonus with NHL 21, NHL ’94 Rewind is a version of the beloved game with a completely modern roster. The gameplay is otherwise unchanged, and fans can expect the same retro graphics and controls they’re used to. The game will release on October 30, 2020, so players will get a hold of the modern-day hockey game before the retro revival.

Other than the pre-order information, not much is known about EA’s plans for NHL ’94 Rewind. The game seems like a prime candidate for a separate launch, especially on a platform like Nintendo Switch that hasn’t gotten many releases from EA Sports this year. That being said, there certainly have been games like this that have only existed as pre-order bonuses, especially if they’re not fully featured. It’s unknown if NHL ’94 Rewind will feature any sort of online play, and a lack of that feature could lean it less towards full-on release and more towards bonus material. On the flip side of that, the fact that the release date doesn’t line up with NHL 21 might make one think that EA has some plans in mind beyond the pre-order period.

Whether NHL ’94 Rewind becomes an NHL 21 pre-order exclusive or a standalone arcade release, the fact that EA is digging into its sports history is a welcome change from the norm. Outside of a few notable exceptions, EA’s lineup of simulations rule the sports genre, and those franchises have quite the legacy. While sports games are often seen as expendable on the used market, the earliest games are getting old enough that they offer an entirely different experience, one that curious modern-day fans will likely be eager to try for themselves.
