One of the best things about Pokémon GO is how it can get people out in the world and playing together in major pre-planned events -unless you’re in Italy, Japan, and Korea.

The official Niantic Support twitter account announced on Friday that they have canceled the Nidorino and Gengar Raid Day events in those three countries. Later that same day, they confirmed that every single planned event in the month of March “may vary” in those same three countries.

While the exact reason for these announcements has not been stated, the general assumption is that the changes in schedule are because of the spread of COVID-19, or the Coronavirus.

The outbreak has been particularly bad in both Italy and South Korea, with the countries each reporting hundreds of cases. Japan has just over 150 confirmed cases as of last week, and has closed all schools to help prevent the virus from spreading. Because of these epidemics, the CDC issued a level 3 warning about both Italy and South Korea, meaning that it recommends all travelers avoid all nonessential travel to the country, and issued a level 2 warning about Japan, meaning that high-risk travelers should take special precautions.

Assuming that the coronavirus cases are the reason for the event changes, this is just another example of the epidemic causing major problems in the games industry.

For example, the GDC conference has been postponed after manycompanies have chosen not to send representatives due to the increased risk of the virus. It’s been more difficult to get your hands on a Nintendo Switch in Japan due to problems with the supply line. Production of the Valve Index has been impacted. The League of Legends Champions Korea room has been closed. Square Enix’s live Final Fantasy event has been canceled. Plague, Inc. was removed from the Chinese app store.

While neither these nor the Pokémon Go cancellations are the worst things to happen due to the spread of the deadly disease, it is a sobering reminder of just how much life has been affected by the outbreak.
