Niantic To Experiment With New Ways To Earn Pokémon GO Coins

Currently in Pokémon GO, the only way to obtain PokéCoins (other than spending money) is by defending gyms, located at various landmarks in your local area. Due to the game’s evolving nature, as well as its recent changes to encourage social distancing, Niantic is now exploring new ways to reward players with the in-game currency.

PokéCoins can be used in the store to purchase a handful of different items that can help you advance in the game. By offering egg incubators, extra storage space, incense, lucky eggs, Pokéballs, starpieces, raid passes, battle items, and more, Pokémon GO actively encourages players to obtain the coins, and the currency has been a huge source of profit for Niantic ever since the game’s 2016 launch, pulling in nearly $900 million in 2019.

Now Pokémon GO will offer PokéCoins to players for completing tasks that can be done around their homes. Each day, you can earn five PokéCoins by completing the following: Make a nice, great, and excellent throw, evolve, catch, and power up Pokémon, use a berry to help catch a Pokémon, take a snapshot of your buddy, and win a raid. Complete all of these tasks in a single day, and you’ll earn five P0kéCoins.

To adjust to this new method of obtaining coins, Niantic has reduced the total number that can be earned by defending gyms from six per hour to two per hour. Additionally, you’ll be able to obtain 55 coins per day instead of only 50. It will still take you a minimum of three days to be able to afford a single egg incubator, and 15 days if you’re unable to visit a gym, so rest assured Niantic will still be pulling in the cash.

It’s also worth noting that the newly introduced remote raid passes only allow players to take part in raids that are within view of their current location. This means that if you don’t live considerably close to an in-game gym, you still have no way of obtaining coins from h0me.

Niantic plans to roll an initial test in Australia in the coming weeks. If things go according to plan, it sounds like the new method of making coins will be introduced to players globally. This isn’t the first move that Niantic has made encouraging fans to play Pokémon GO from home, and it likely won’t be the last.
