The Addams Family 2 premieres in theaters and On Demand on October 1, and the anticipated sequel takes everyone’s favorite family on a road trip. The scheme is engineered by patriarch Gomez (Oscar Isaac, Dune), who worries that his beloved children are slipping away from him as they get older. This is especially true of eldest daughter Wednesday (Chloë Grace Moretz, Tom and Jerry), whose teenage angst is reaching a boiling point.

Wednesday’s troubles are actually linked to a potential family secret carried by Uncle Fester (Nick Kroll, Big Mouth), although how aware he is of his role in the proceedings is debatable. Regardless, he is always there for his loved ones, even when things get particularly weird. And they’re sure to get strange on this vacation, especially when some uninvited guests try to break the Addams family apart.

Kroll spoke to Screen Rant about playing around with Uncle Fester’s already wild antics, and what adventures he hopes to see the family embark on in future films.

Screen Rant: Uncle Fester gets the Addams Family into some hot water this time around. How aware or oblivious would you say that he is throughout this film of what is going on?

Nick Kroll: I would say Uncle Fester in general is pretty oblivious and unaware of what his actions and their consequences might be. I think that’s what makes him such an entertaining character to watch. I don’t know if I’d want him as my uncle, but I will say he also is filled with joy and likes to have a good time. And, ultimately, he’d probably be an exciting guy to have around.

He has plenty of opportunities for a good time in this film because we get an Addams Family road trip. Are there any moments or locations that you had the most fun putting Fester in?

Nick Kroll: I think Niagara Falls was a fun location, and the Grand Canyon; two classic iconic stops on an American road trip. Being able to play in those spaces is very fun.

Also, sending Fester to the beach. Because I don’t know if this is a spoiler, but as every film always plays, his niece mixes his DNA with that of an octopus. So, Fester’s becoming an octopus. As is always the case. So, the beach is an active place for him to be.

The fun thing is that Uncle Fester has a lot to do, which gave me a lot to do and a lot to play with. So, it was a joy.

As a creator and writer yourself, how much do you get to play with Uncle Fester in addition to what they already give you on the page?

Nick Kroll: I have worked with this creative team before on Sausage Party, which is not as much of a family film. But I think part of the reason they hired me, and I think part of the reason I get hired for other kinds of gigs like this, is because I will add things here and there. Sometimes it gets used; sometimes it doesn’t.

But especially with animation, it never hurts to have a couple of different options, and it keeps it active and fun for me. Oftentimes, some bits and bobs of that make it into the final product. It’s very fun, and they’re very open to it. That’s the beauty of animation: you can really try anything, and it’s not any skin off anyone’s back.

Speaking of options, is there anywhere that you’d like The Addams Family to go next?

Nick Kroll: I guess space is the final frontier, right?

Comic-Con could be fun. Maybe they run into some cosplay versions of themselves and see what happens, or people think they’re in costume. Maybe I’ll pitch it. I’ve got to pitch it to the studio next.
