Square Enix has announced that NieR: Automata has sold over 5.5 million copies. Released for PC and PS4 back in 2017 and Xbox One in 2018, NieR Automata, an action RPG developed by PlatinumGames, was nominated for Best Role Playing Game at The Game Awards 2017.

Last December 24, NieR Series tweeted, “We never quite realized… how beautiful this world is. #NieR:Automata has shipped and digitally sold over five million copies worldwide. Thank you, everyone.”

Production on Nier Automata began in 2014, with series creator Yoko Taro, producer Yosuke Saito, and lead composer Keiichi Okabe returning, and artist Akihiko Yoshida taking over character design. In the game, players take on the role of combat androids from the YoRHa units across an open world.

As with the original, the camera shifts during navigation in some environments from its third-person perspective to a birdseye or side-scrolling view. Meanwhile, combat is hack and slash action-based, with players battling enemies in real-time in an array of in-game environments. The “Game of the YoRHa” edition of Nier: Automata was released for PS4 and PC on February 26, 2019.

NieR Re[in]carnation, a mobile game, is set to be released on iOS and Android in Japan on February 18, 2021. A special in-game collaboration event featuring characters 2B, 9S and A2 from NieR Automata will be held the same day as the launch.

In addition, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139, a remake of the original NieR, will be released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on April 23. The game, which takes place in the universe of Nier and its sequel Nier: Automata, is set in a realm called the Cage in which the player takes on the role of a girl guided by a ghost-like being. A new gameplay trailer was previewed during The Game Awards. In its description, Square Enix states:

“Discover the one-of-a-kind prequel of the critically-acclaimed masterpiece NieR: Automata. Now with a modern upgrade, experience masterfully revived visuals, a fascinating storyline and more! The protagonist is a kind young man living in a remote village. In order to save his sister Yonah, who fell terminally ill to the Black Scrawl, he sets out with Grimoire Weiss, a strange talking tome, to search for the Sealed verses.”
