Despite having the same director, Nightwing will present a very different Dick Grayson than the one seen in The LEGO Batman Movie. While Wonder Woman and Justice League were the DCEU’s only two films this year, The LEGO Batman Movie brought a record number of DC Comics characters to the big screen at the beginning of 2017. The film proved to be a fun expansion of the LEGO film world and feature tons of DC Easter eggs. It also put director Chris McKay in Warner Bros’ good graces.

Fans were surprised when the release of The LEGO Batman Movie was swiftly followed by news that a Nightwing movie was in the works. Even stranger was McKay being announced as the one to helm the film. Clearly, his love for DC and the Batman Family is big, but fans of Dick Grayson’s darker alter-ego have worried about whether McKay can be true to the character. For some, that worry even stemmed from Grayson’s portrayal in the LEGO form earlier this year. Luckily, McKay says fans have nothing to fear.

Responding to a rather harsh criticism from a fan about how Grayson/Robin was shown in The LEGO Batman Movie, Chris McKay calmly responded that he has every intention of being true to the character in Nightwing.

This movie will be different than LEGO Batman, different than any other Gotham based film or TV show and will be a wholly original look at Robin/Dick Grayson. Don’t lose hope.

Robin in The LEGO Batman Movie is a rambunctious and precocious orphan boy who idolizes Batman. Naturally, fans wouldn’t want to see a take like that in Nightwing. Of course, all of the characters were exaggerated for comedic effect, including Batman himself. It’s one thing to worry about McKay’s bona fides for directing Nightwing, but how characters were presented in an animated comedy film aimed at kids is clearly the wrong tack.

As for when the Nightwing movie will actually arrive, fans may know soon enough. Despite how chaotic DC’s film slate has been, Nightwing still seems to be moving forward. McKay announced an open casting call for Nightwing yesterday, proving production should start soon. When it does, it will join films like Aquaman, Shazam!, and Wonder Woman 2 on DC’s definitive film slate.

Despite the open casting call, though, the role of Nightwing may still land with an established actor. Stranger Things and Power Rangers star Dacre Montgomery wants to play Nightwing, and others having been lining up over the years to tackle the role. Assuming the auditions wrap before year’s end, fans shouldn’t have to wait much longer to learn who will bring Dick Grayson to life in Nightwing.
