Dick Grayson, the first-ever sidekick, debuted in the Golden Age of comic books as Batman’s partner in crime. Eventually, he became his own hero, Nightwing, beginning a long and thrilling solo journey that turned him into DC’s greatest source for good.

Throughout his extensive history, Nightwing has worn multiple costumes, each sporting the trademark bird across his chest. The colors sometimes shift, but the essence stays the same. And while every outfit is unique in its own way, a few have become absolute staples of the character, ranking among the best superhero costumes in all of DC.

7 New 52 Disco Suit

The New 52 run marked a distinct departure for Nightwing’s trademark style. It went in a darker route, opting for a more subdued take on Dick’s classic costume. Most fans are well aware of the red suit (more on it later), but the New 52 also offered its take on Nightwing’s now-iconic disco suit, which he first used during his time as a founding member of the Teen Titans. Alas, it left a lot to desire.

Lacking the campy elements that made the original disco suit such a classic, the New 52 version is dull and forgettable. It does feature the feather motif on the chest and around the waist, but it’s not enough to rescue this uninteresting reinterpretation from oblivion.

6 Second Disco Suit

The ’90s offered a new and less flamboyant version of the disco suit. In keeping with the time’s sensibilities, Dick became more muscular than ever before. In addition, his hair transformed from a full-on wavy mane, which he sometimes styled in a ponytail that at one point reached his waist, to an infamous mullet that the character hasn’t been able to live down to this day.

The second disco suit was DC’s attempt to take Nightwing from teenager to adult, with mixed results. On the plus side, it does feel like a natural progression from the previous version, respecting the suit’s idea without making any extreme changes. However, the excess of yellow is somewhat jarring. The choice to add retractable yellow wings made sense on paper, but the execution made him look like Addams Family Values’ Pugsley during Camp Chippewa’s Thanksgiving play.

5 New 52 Suit

At first, changing Dick’s iconic blue-and-black color scheme seemed blasphemous. However, the New 52 offered a fresh take on Nightwing’s look by turning electric blue into radical red, giving the character a second look as appealing as the previous one.

The look faced some backlash initially, with fans comparing it negatively to the character’s suit in the notoriously awful but perhaps secretly underrated Batman and Robin. However, the New 52 costume has become more popular over time. Many fans now consider it a worthy homage to Dick’s days as the Boy Wonder. The bird becomes more of a bat, solidifying his role as the Bat-Family’s second in command. The red once again spreads through his chest and goes down his arms, stopping at his wrists. Two barely visible red stripes slide down his waist, providing the finishing touch to Nightwing’s most alarming suit yet.

4 “Blue V” Suit

The “Blue V” suit is the quintessential Nightwing costume for many fans. Dick sported it for his first solo series, and it quickly became one of his most recognizable looks. It makes sense, considering it features a near-perfect mix of electric blue, which instantly pops out against the otherwise pitch-black ensemble. The blue spreads throughout his shoulders and into his arms, ultimately reaching his fingers.

“Blue V” is a more mature take on Nightwing’s look, signifying his rise into a bonafide hero who can go toe to toe with DC’s best heroes of all time. However, the suit lacks the bird imagery that has become Nightwing’s calling card, and while the “V” does serve the same function, it’s not the same without the bird’s tiny head resting between Dick’s chest.

3 Disco Suit

All hail the disco suit, a kitschy representation of ’80s sensibilities that turned Dick Grayson into a bonafide sex symbol. The outfit features many bizarre choices, including a high collar and a plunging neckline almost as deep as Starfire’s, Nightwing’s true love. Different shades of blue and a yellow feathery motif around his chest and back add further layers into an already crowded mix.

And yet, the outfit works. It looks out of place, ridiculous even, but it’s still a solid effort. The ideas it balances aren’t bad individually; they’re just overwhelming when put together. Still, the disco suit stands as a relic of a time long ago when heroes were flamboyant and unafraid to laugh at themselves. And if there’s a superhero who’d look back at his unfortunate choices and smile with zero embarrassment, it’s Nightwing.

2 Finger-Stripes Suit

Nightwing’s current run will feature yet another interpretation of Nightwing’s suit, arriving in January 2022 and affectionately referred to by fans as the “finger-stripes suit.” As expected, it brings back the finger-stripes first seen in the “Blue V” suit but keeps the bird imagery that began with the Rebirth initiative.

The result is the best of both worlds, an outfit that feels like the ultimate version of the beloved character’s most iconic look. Even better, the suit feels like the ideal fit for Dick Grayson. It’s practical and restrained but still memorable and even somewhat playful, just like the hero it clothes. The addition of two blue escrima sticks and the suit becomes a hundred times better.

1 Rebirth Suit

The Rebirth initiative took things literally, relaunching its universe after the divisiveness of the New 52. Gone is Dick’s more aggressive persona, replaced with the traditional Nightwing, the most wholesome of DC’s superheroes. Thus, he ditched the crimson and went back to his baby blues, to the joy of fans around the world.

Nightwing’s Rebirth suit is the best possible version of his look. The bird in his chest is back, bluer and thinner than ever, going around his shoulders and back. His mask is also blue, as are his calves. There are no extra details, or overwhelming splashed of color. It’s a straightforward adaptation of the very idea of Nightwing, the representation of “less is more.” And in this case, it really is.
