Nintendo Announces New Free Pokemon Game for Switch

Pokemon Sword & Shield’s first expansion, The Isle of Armor, is available to download from the Nintendo eShop today for owners of the expansion pass. However, the new expansion isn’t the only big release for Pokemon fans to be excited about. In a 10-minute presentation released earlier today, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company unveiled three brand new Pokemon games, including Pokemon Cafe Mix, a free-to-start Pokemon puzzle game coming to Nintendo Switch and mobile devices.

Starting today, Pokemon trainers will be able to pre-load Pokemon Cafe Mix through the Nintendo Switch eShop, pre-order the app in the iOS App Store, or pre-register in the Google Play Store. Taking cues from popular puzzle games like Candy Crush, Pokemon Cafe Mix puts players in charge of their own Starbucks-style cafe where they’ll manage a team of familiar faces from the series and prepare drinks and dishes for Pokemon customers.

As the cafe owner, trainers will work alongside familiar faces such as Pikachu, Eevee, and Charmander, to prepare orders for the cafe’s customers. Completing customer orders requires players to complete unique puzzles by swirling around Pokemon-themed icons using the touch-screen and trying to link together as many of the same icon or species as possible for a higher score. Each of the staff Pokemon will have their own unique skills to help solve puzzles, however, The Pokemon Company didn’t go into further detail on how these would work.

To add to the fun, players can level up friendships levels with Pokemon and get their own regular customers if the service is good. By completing more puzzles and earning a strong reputation with the local Pokemon, players will unlock new upgrade tools for the cafe that can be used to add new areas and rooms, with different areas attracting new and unique Pokemon to come and visit.

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company haven’t provided any information on the game’s release window outside of the promise the game’s “coming soon.” Pokemon Cafe Mix will be free-to-start and feature in-app purchases, however, little information is known about how these work. In the meantime, a brand new Pokemon Snap game was also announced for Nintendo Switch, inspired by the Nintendo 64 classic. New Pokemon Snap is a new game, not a remake, and features never-before-seen Pokemon expressions and behaviours.

Pokemon Cafe Mix is in development for Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.
