Those who are expecting Nintendo to release a new iteration of the Switch in 2020 will be disappointed to learn that the president of the company has shot down the idea of an updated model this year.
The base version of the Nintendo Switch was released in 2017 and fans have been expecting an updated model ever since, in the same vein as the XL or new models that the 3DS received. Though 2019 saw the release of the Switch Lite, which was a portable-only version of the system that was a hundred dollars cheaper, there has been no updated version of the Switch to date.
It seems that the theoretical Switch Pro is still a ways off. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently answered questions to shareholders, which has been translated into English and released by the company on its website. Furukawa brought up the notion of a new Switch model and said that there wouldn’t be one in 2020.
“Regarding Nintendo Switch, we believe that it is important to continue to communicate the appeal of both Nintendo Switch systems and expand the installed base. Please note that we have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020.”
There have been rumors circulating regarding a Switch Pro or another updated model, but this is the first concrete statement from Nintendo in regards to the likelihood of the system arriving soon. The Switch Lite underperformed in comparison to the base model of the system, so Nintendo could be reticent to rock the boat, especially as the regular Switch is selling so well. Just because a Switch Pro or another updated model isn’t due to be released in 2020 doesn’t mean that there won’t be any news regarding such a system this year. It’s possible that an announcement could be made at E3 or during a late Direct, with an eye for a 2021 release date.
The 2020 holiday season is going to see the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and it’s unclear how Nintendo is going to compete with the next generation of systems. It’s possible that Nintendo wants to wait out the competition and launch something big in 2021, once the initial hype surrounding the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X dies down.
