Gamers are standing on the precipice of the next generation of gaming, and it seems as if Nintendo has been dropping hints to game developers that the long-awaited Nintendo Switch Pro is on its way. Fans have always assumed that Nintendo would release a beefier version of the Switch, much like it has with previous hand-held consoles, and now these assumptions may become a reality.

The Nintendo Switch was released in 2017 with an all-star roster of games to follow during the console’s first year on shelves. Titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 made the Nintendo Switch’s first year one of the greatest for a Nintendo console. A handheld-only version of the console, the Nintendo Switch Lite, has already been introduced to the console’s hardware ecosystem, along with couple under-the-radar hardware revisions to the main system. The Switch Lite serves as Nintendo’s budget DS replacement, allowing gamers to play exclusive first-party games at a low price. Sadly, the Switch maxes out at 1080p when docked and 720p in handheld mode and struggles to play some titles that weren’t developed with the Switch’s hardware in mind.

According to Bloomberg, Nintendo has been dropping hints to developers that the Nintendo Switch Pro is on its way. While the term “Switch Pro” has yet to be used by Nintendo, it is the term used by the gaming community to describe a more powerful Switch console. A Bloomberg report claims, “Several outside game developers, speaking anonymously as the issue is private, said that Nintendo has asked them to make their games 4K-ready, suggesting a resolution upgrade is on its way.” It’s been previously speculated that Nintendo is planning the launch of the Switch Pro for 2021 and that the beefed up console will feature 4K resolution (most likely while docked) and additional computing power.

Nintendo has been known in the past to release multiple iterations of the same console over a long period of time with each system being an upgrade from the last. Most namely, the Nintendo 3DS evolved into the New Nintendo 3DS XL over a period of four years followed by the 2DS XL which was a lesser version of the 3DS’ final form. While Nintendo hasn’t had the same approach to stationary consoles (i.e. Wii and GameCube), the Switch is a hybrid console and Nintendo has already shown it is willing to give it the DS treatment when developing the Switch Lite.

It is hard to complain about the Nintendo Switch’s hardware since it has offered some of the most beautiful first-party experiences Nintendo has ever produced. Games such as BOTW or Super Mario Odyssey offer players stunning open environments to explore and utilize every aspect of the Switch’s limited hardware. The Switch does stumble when playing Overwatch or other third-party titles, and functioning ports require a massive amount of downscaling. While the Nintendo Switch Pro isn’t necessary for the current roster of first-party titles, it will be nice to play Skyrim in 4K again.
