Nintendo has released their latest financial report that covers the 2018 holiday season. The company has sold an incredible amount of Switches & Switch games over the past year, even though 2018 didn’t have many first-party titles.
The Nintendo Switch itself has sold 32.27 million units so far, which means that it has almost beaten the lifetime sales of the Nintendo 64, which sits at 32.93 million units sold. The Switch has now sold double of the Wii U’s lifetime sales and may even beat the Super Nintendo’s numbers (49.10 million units) by the end of 2019.
There have been some big shakeups in the lineup of the best-selling games on the Nintendo Switch as well.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now the best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch, with a staggering 15.02 million units sold. It just goes to show how popular the Mario Kart franchise is when you consider that the game is an updated port of a Wii U game. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has pushed Super Mario Odyssey to second place, with 13.76 million units sold.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now the third best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch, with 12.08 million units sold. These numbers are especially impressive when you consider that the game has only been out for a month and has already outsold The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is the fourth best-selling game with 11.68 million units sold.
The other big hit from the 2018 holiday season was Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu & Let’s Go Eevee, which have sold a combined number of 10 million units. The Let’s Go games have done incredibly well, though perhaps not as well as some pundits originally believed considering its connection to Pokémon Go.
The Nintendo Switch has had an incredible second year, thanks to a slew of amazing third-party games such as Diablo III and Fortnite, which helped to keep the system relevant until the big holiday season when Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu & Let’s Go Eevee were released.
The question now is if whether Nintendo can repeat this success in 2019?
Metroid Prime 4 has definitely been pushed back several years, while we still know almost nothing about the first-party lineup of 2019. Nintendo is keeping its cards close to its chest and we can only hope that they don’t have a hand full of Jokers.
