Nintendo Identifies Pokemon Sword and Shield Leaker Cuts Ties

Back during the promotional period of Pokemon Sword and Shield, some unauthorized leaks of the game flooded the internet, unveiling things before their time like Gigantamax forms and never-before-seen Pokemon. Considering premature reveals like this potentially killed any surprises Nintendo and The Pokemon Company had in store, the two companies were understandably unhappy with the situation and decided to hunt down those responsible.

Since then, Nintendo has identified one of the sources of the damaging leaks: a news site called FNintendo. One of the site’s reviewers took advantage of the pre-released copies of Pokemon Sword and Shield that Nintendo entrusted them with and posted pictures of yet-revealed Pokemon online.

The act broke the NDA agreement between Nintendo and FNintendo, and Nintendo responded by severing all ties to the news outlet. Essentially, FNintendo will no longer receive any Nintendo products — this includes not only Pokemon but every other IP in Nintendo’s roster. The site will also no longer be able to attend any Nintendo events.

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company released a joint statement breaking down their decision to the VideoGamesChronical (VGC) news site. Essentially, FNintendo and the reviewer who leaked the images mishandled confidential information, and as a result, leaked Sword and Shield mechanics and Pokemon that Nintendo and The Pokemon Company were not ready to show the public. According to the two companies, the leaks didn’t just hurt them, but “the thousands of employees who work hard to bring games to market,” and the “millions of fans” looking forward to official news and surprises.

FNintendo has since fired the reviewer who leaked the images, but sadly, the damage looks to be irreversible. In its own statement, the news site accepts the fact that it will no longer receive anything from Nintendo and has apologized to it, The Pokemon Company, and the fans for “letting them down.”

It’s a shame that everyone else working for the site will be negatively affected by the actions of one individual, especially now that Nintendo has revealed that Pokemon Sword and Shield will receive a two-part DLC expansion that releases throughout the year. The first part of the DLC, the Isle of Armor, will release in June and introduce new Pokemon and Pokemon forms currently unavailable in the vanilla titles.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
