The latest revelation from the Nintendo leaks is a set of sprites from Super Mario World dating back to the ’80s, showing a radically different look for Mario than what appeared in the final version of the game.

Super Mario World was released in 1990 as a pack-in title for the Super Nintendo. Expectations were sky-high for the game, as it was one of the first major titles of the 16-bit generation. Super Mario World was one of the best games of its era and it helped to cement Nintendo’s place in the market, which helped a great deal, as the company was just about to go to war with Sega.

The past month has seen a massive leak of Nintendo assets from games from the Game Boy, Super Nintendo, and Nintendo 64. A number of Super Mario World prototypes have been released, some of which include betas that have only been seen in screenshots from ancient gaming magazines. The latest find (courtesy of the Nintendo Metro Twitter page) is a set of Mario sprites dating back to ’89, which show a more vibrant and detailed appearance for the character.

Fans quickly pointed out that the sprites are similar to the ones used in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, which was developed by Square Enix (then known as Squaresoft) and released years seven years later.

It’s clear from the Super Mario World betas that the developers spent a lot of time thinking about Mario’s appearance in his next game. This was the company’s first-ever jump to a new console and the Super Nintendo could do a lot of things with its hardware that the NES was incapable of doing, so it makes sense that the developers would want to experiment. It’s unclear why this design was scrapped for Mario in Super Mario World, as it’s certainly a striking appearance. The fact that there are so few sprites suggest that it was canned without too much thought unless there are other sprites from this point in development that haven’t been uncovered yet.
