While players of the Nintendo Switch console have been fortunate to receive many quality titles this year, it now appears that things are getting weird. Nintendo posted a brief video touting a “new experience” for the console, showing off a round, grey steering wheel-sized controller that holds one of the system’s Joy-Con controllers. Then, the second Joy-Con is placed inside another plastic sleeve and strapped onto the user’s thigh.

What follows are several families from around the world using the device to play a game that we are not shown on screen. The players perform a broad range of movements that resemble those from the Wii Fit, back on the original Nintendo Wii console. They strike their best yoga poses, dance, run on the spot, and appear to engage in endurance activities. One woman is seen doing her best Suzanne Somers impression with a makeshift Thighmaster.

While we are not shown the game that is being played, this is no doubt associated with fitness, either for single player use, as shown in the video, or with challenges for a group. It is clearly not meant to be a multiplayer game in the traditional sense of competing or working together all at once, but more like a hotseat, where the “controller” is passed around from round to round.

As for what kind of software we might see, there are a broad range of options. As stated, a successor to the Wii Fit seems like a natural choice. The game and concept of using a balance board for the first console was a smash hit and sold well, though the same could not be said of its successor on the Wii U. However, this is mainly attributed to the overall low sales of Wii U console sales, and a bit on the lack of innovation between games, as they used the same style of balance board hardware but with updated games.

Since the Joy-Cons have high-quality motion controls, what we have seen in the video may well be an accurate way to track player movements and remove the need for the balance board altogether. However, will this be the next big product for Nintendo, selling like hotcakes, or is it another 1-2-Switch?

For the unfamiliar, and there may be many, 1-2-Switch was a launch title for the system that had no business being sold as a full-priced game. It was meant to be a party game that made extensive use of the Joy-Con controllers and their motion sensors. The result was a bland, often repetitive selection of games that were interesting the first time, at best, and quickly forgotten. Has Nintendo learned its lesson since then? We certainly hope so.

The Dream – A WarioWare Twisted Sequel!

Since we did not hear any of the distinctive sounds made by Wario, we have no reason to believe that this is a sequel to the popular WarioWare Twisted, or do we? Such sounds would have given away what might be a massive surprise to be unveiled on September 12, the date listed at the end of the video when we will have more information.

WarioWare Twisted’s core gameplay mechanics involved the use of simple motion controls to pilot various minigames. While the gameplay was simplistic in the Gameboy Advance console, it nonetheless received critical acclaim. A re-imagining of the game with the sophistication of the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con technology would surely be a welcome addition to the console.

While the idea of a new WariorWare game may interest some, the real money is likely in the Wii Fit. Despite having released in 2007, the Wii Fit remains today one of the 5 top-selling sports franchises in history. The potential for another financial windfall is reason for the company to explore a spiritual successor to the large, white balance board.

For now, it is purely speculation, but we are sure to see more interesting and weird developments on September 12.
