With Space Jam 2 hitting theaters in 2021, developer Dave Lang has expressed interest in creating a video game adaptation for the new movie.

You probably have heard the news: Space Jam, the 1996 crossover between Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes, is getting a sequel. Space Jam 2 is set to release in 2021, this time with LeBron James playing the big star. Would you play a video game based on it? Dave Lang hopes so. Lang was a developer of the first Space Jam video game, and he took to Twitter to express his desire to make an adaption of the new movie.

Space Jam the video game was originally released for PlayStation, SEGA Saturn, and MS-DOS. Like the film, the game focused on basketball. There were also bonus minigames. Though the game was negatively received, many have fond memories of playing it when they were younger. Those who played it remember how overpowered Jordan was compared to the rest of the characters. (Think Pablo Sanchez from Backyard Baseball.) Interestingly, Space Jam wasn’t the first Looney Tunes basketball title. Looney Tunes B-Ball was an SNES title that released a year before Space Jam, and was ironically better received.

Space Jam 2 receiving a video game tie-in would be interesting in the modern day. This would have been expected fifteen years ago since video game tie-ins and adaptions were very common at the time. Every Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that was released before The Avengers and every Spider-Man movie, aside from Homecoming, received a console game. Many early Pixar films also received games. However, today, it is rare for companies to make movie tie-in games. Why? Most video game tie-ins are either received as mediocre or critically panned. Their quality seems to be lower than non-tie-ins. There are exceptions of course, such as Spider-Man 2 and Peter Jackson’s King Kong. However, for the most part, movie tie-in games played worse and looked worse than their triple-A cousins.

Space Jam the film has an interesting reputation. It only has a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, which means that most critics don’t consider it to be high entertainment. However, it has received positive reviews from some. The late Roger Ebert, who was known as one of the greatest film critics of all time, gave the film 3 and a half stars out of 4. Many have fond memories of watching it when they were younger. With plenty of Looney Tunes humor throughout, it makes for a great watch for the family.
