Spider-Man: No Way Home has an opportunity to finally explain a line from 2004’s Spider-Man 2 involving Doctor Strange. In the Sam Raimi-directed film, the Daily Bugle’s editor J. Jonah Jamesson and his staff refer to the Sorcerer Supreme, even though he was never featured in the Raimi trilogy of Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. While it was no doubt meant to be a funny reference at the time, multiversal chaos in the next MCU Spider-Man film will feature Strange himself along with a handful of elements from Spider-Man 2, offering the perfect chance for an opportunity to explain JJJ’s line.

In 2004’s Spider-Man 2, Alfred Molina’s Otto Octavius has just come onto the scene in New York, having escaped the hospital after the mechanical arms fused to his body killed the doctors. Looking to take advantage of the rising fear and panic, Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson (J.K Simmons) wanted to give a name to Octavius that would be flashy for the headlines and sell their papers. While he and his staff started brainstorming names like “Doctor Octopus” and “Science Squid”, the name “Doctor Strange” was thrown into the mix which Jameson actually liked, but then remembered that it was already “taken”, a clear reference to Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme himself.

Now, Doctor Strange is going to be helping Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the MCU-connected Spider-Man: No Way Home, dealing with the multiversal fallout caused by a spell gone wrong meant to make the world forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. However, the final moments of the trailer tease villains such as Electro and Green Goblin from other universes, with the final shot confirming the involvement of Molina’s Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2. Combined with the fact that J.K Simmons also plays Jameson in the primary MCU universe, all the pieces are there for the 2004 Doctor Strange line to somehow be referenced. While it could be as simple as this new Jameson repeating the same line as a fun callback, a reference could also come from something like Doctor Strange needing the fix the respective universes and repair the damage caused, which could then make the Raimi-universe aware of Strange’s presence (while not being from their respective universe).

Seeing as how Jameson, Doc Ock, and Doctor Strange are all going to be featured in this new film, Marvel Studios and Sony would be remiss if they didn’t have some sort of tribute to the hilarious line of dialogue from 2004. While its reference to a greater world of heroes didn’t go anywhere in Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, it could absolutely go somewhere now, hilariously paying off the line that was said almost 17 years ago. It’s too great of an opportunity to pass up, and longtime fans of the Webslinger would no doubt love it as a great homage.

In any case, Spider-Man: No Way Home is going to be packed with plenty of action and excitement, and it’s definitely being set up to become one of the biggest Spider-Man films of all time (especially if Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Peter Parker make their rumored appearances alongside Tom Holland). That being said, Jameson’s Doctor Strange line was one of the first references in film to a shared world of Marvel heroes that predated the MCU. As such, Spider-Man: No Way Home has the perfect means to pay off that line in an organic and fun way when the film releases on December 17th.
