The second trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home revealed more details about the plot, including that the villains that are crossing over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe all died fighting their respective versions of Spider-Man, and that supports all those theories about the return of Mysterio. The MCU continues expanding with its highly-anticipated Phase 4, which in addition to covering TV shows and movies, is exploring the concept of the multiverse and its many dangers, and will go deeper into it with Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The last time viewers saw Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) was showing a video left by Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in which he framed the web-slinger for his murder and revealed the hero’s identity to the whole world. Spider-Man: No Way Home, then, will see Peter dealing with the consequences of having his biggest secret exposed, and in an effort to keep those he loves safe, he will ask Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help. Strange will agree to cast a spell that will make everyone forget that Peter is Spider-Man, but it won’t go as planned, and instead, they will open the gates of the multiverse, making way for the arrival of different villains from past Spider-Man universes.

The second Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer confirmed the five main villains that will cross over from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man universe and that of The Amazing Spider-Man to the MCU: Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman, and Lizard. However, the second trailer also revealed too much about the story, such as all of these villains dying in their respective universes while fighting Spider-Man, even if on the big screen it wasn’t the case for all of them. However, following this line, it would be entirely possible for Spider-Man: Far From Home’s villain Mysterio to return, as many fans have been theorizing for months.

The final battle in Spider-Man: Far From Home saw Spider-Man trying to disrupt Mysterio’s illusions and regain control of E.D.I.T.H., which he eventually gets. Mysterio is then hit by a misfired gunshot from one of his many drones and dies, but he had one final trick up his sleeve. As mentioned above, he left a video in which he framed Spider-Man for his murder and all his actions and exposed the web-slinger’s secret identity. Mysterio, then, died fighting his version of Spider-Man, and with all villains so far coming from two past universes (and them missing one Sinister Six member), Mysterio could make a comeback as the villain from a parallel but closer universe to the main MCU timeline. Now, many have theorized that Mysterio faked his death, but following the line of villains who died facing Spider-Man, this Mysterio would have to be one from the multiverse.

Even if the trailer revealed some key details about the plot, Sony and Marvel surely have a couple more surprises that will remain secret until Spider-Man: No Way Home comes out, and while most fans are expecting to see Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, there’s still a chance that Mysterio could make an appearance at some point in the story.
