Even though Mulan only appeared in 3 of Once Upon a Time’s 7 seasons, she proved to be one of the show’s most compelling and influential supporting characters. 10 Saving Belle

When Belle was attacked and nearly thrown into a well, Mulan came to her aid and saved her. Mulan helped a fellow woman when she was in need, knowing all too well from her time in the Emperor’s army about “fools who think we have no business holding a sword.” Mulan wished someone had been able to stand up for her and now she was able to stand up for Belle.

Afterward, Mulan proposed that she would kill the Yaoguai, but only with Belle’s help tracking the beast. Instead of believing she had to do everything alone, Mulan opened herself up to the possibility of companionship and connection.

9 Encouraging Belle To Believe In Herself

When her leg wound impeded her pursuit of the Yaoguai, Mulan placed all of her faith in Belle. Belle didn’t believe that she had what it took to confront the Yaoguai on her own, but Mulan inspired Belle to find something worth fighting for and made her believe she had what it took to complete the mission.

Mulan was instrumental in helping Belle overcome her fear and to become a more confident person. Not only did Mulan confront the Yaoguai, but she was able to discern that the beast was actually a human cursed into a monstrous form, and she figured out how to free the person–Prince Phillip–from this curse.

8 The Wise Advice She Gave Princess Aurora

Distraught over the death of her beloved Prince Phillip, Princess Aurora was desperate to seek revenge, even if it meant hurting others. Mulan delivered one of the best quotes in the series and gave Aurora wise advice to counter this rage, telling her that “it’s dangerous to confuse justice with vengeance.”

Mulan’s words are an important reminder about not letting emotions overrule a sense of what is right or wrong. When Aurora tried to attack Snow White, Mulan stood by her words, ensuring that no one was harmed and that Aurora didn’t let her thirst for vengeance lead to an unjust outcome.

7 Assisting Emma And Snow White With Their Quest

When the first Dark Curse was broken, Snow White and Prince Charming regained their memories and were overjoyed to reunite with Emma, the daughter they’d been separated from for 28 years. This joy was short-lived as Emma and Snow White were taken to the Enchanted Forest against their will, leaving them desperate to find a way back to their loved ones in Storybrooke.

Despite her initial suspicions, Mulan grew to trust Emma and Snow. She helped them in their quest to return to Storybrooke, such as when she provided Emma with poppy dust needed to knock out the giant guarding the compass they sought.

6 Teaching Swordplay To Merida

During her time serving King Fergus of DunBroch, Mulan trained Merida in the art of swordplay. Mulan was an excellent teacher, whose lessons went beyond teaching how to duel properly and how to disarm an enemy.

She helped Merida learn to fight better than any man, and helped her understand that it is more important to fight with honor and intelligence than it is to fight with strength. Mulan taught Merida how to tap into her full potential not only as a warrior but also as the future leader of DunBroch.

5 Aiding Neal

When Mulan, Aurora, and Phillip discovered Neal in the Enchanted Forest, he was unconscious and injured. Mulan helped Neal get to a safe place and assisted with tending to his injuries. She continued to help him by participating in his plan to get to Neverland so he could help save his son Henry.

Mulan used her sword to sever the Shadow’s arm, preventing it from taking Roland and causing it to flee, giving Neal the opportunity to latch onto the fleeing Shadow that would take him to Neverland.

4 Freeing Ruby From Captivity

When Mulan encountered a wolf guarding a witch’s hut, Mulan was perceptive enough to realize that it wasn’t a wolf after all. When the wolf attacked her, Mulan knocked over a cauldron, the contents of which freed Ruby.

Ruby went to a witch in DunBroch, seeking help with finding fellow werewolves. Instead of helping her, the witch trapped Ruby inside of her werewolf form, using Ruby to guard the hut. Not only did Mulan free Ruby from being permanently trapped in her werewolf form, but she also gained a valuable ally and friend.

3 Helping Merida Reclaim Her Identity And Her Crown

When all seemed lost, the usually fiery Merida was on the brink of giving up her fight and surrendering her crown. Mulan convinced Merida to not give up and with Ruby’s help, Mulan ensured that they found the mysterious knight who killed King Fergus, along with the magical helm that could determine DunBroch’s future.

The mysterious knight turned out to be King Arthur and when Merida confronted him, she not only got the helm but demonstrated the bravery and selfless leadership necessary to reclaim her identity and prove herself worthy of the crown. Without Mulan, none of this would have been possible.

2 Joining Ruby’s Quest To Find Werewolves

After Mulan and Ruby helped Merida, Ruby gave Mulan the opportunity to join her in her quest to find other werewolves. Mulan was in desperate need of companionship and purpose at the time.

Ruby helped provide those things for Mulan, promising that helping her would eventually lead to Mulan finding her own path and purpose. Agreeing to this led Mulan to some meaningful adventures, including when she and Ruby teamed up with Dorothy in Oz.

1 Encouraging Ruby To Share Her True Feelings

When Mulan and Ruby’s search for werewolves brought them to Oz, they met Dorothy and ended up helping her. During this adventure, Ruby realized she had romantic feelings for Dorothy.

Ruby was afraid of rejection, but Mulan encouraged her to share her feelings. Mulan knew from personal experience that holding back one’s true feelings until it’s too late could be detrimental and lead to a lifetime full of regret. Ruby ultimately followed through on Mulan’s advice, waking Dorothy from a sleeping curse with true love’s kiss, thereby cementing a happy ending for Ruby and Dorothy.
