One Justice League Member Almost Accidentally Killed The Entire Team

The Justice League is made up of some of DC’s most powerful superheroes, and when her powers began malfunctioning in ways nobody had ever seen, Vixen took on the powers of her teammates to become a one-woman League of her own. Mari McCabe never wielded such immense power, but that changed when her Tantu Totem was stolen. Passed down through her family for generations, the Totem is an artifact that allows her to channel the abilities of any creature in the animal kingdom.

As Vixen, Mari was a hero for years as a member of Justice League Detroit, as well as Amanda Waller’s Suicide Squad. She even helped reform the Justice League after the events of Infinite Crisis. But when the Totem was tampered with, Mari’s abilities weren’t the only thing changed – reality changed along with them.

In Justice League of America #2 by Brad Meltzer and Ed Benes, Mari’s Totem was stolen and used in the recreation of the Amazo android, acting as a siphon through which the android focuses the powers of the League. Vixen gets it back, but soon finds that the damage to the Totem is difficult to undo after realizing that she’s no longer channeling the powers of the animal kingdom – she’s channeling the powers of the Justice League instead. Mari keeps the discovery to herself, with only Red Arrow and Superman learning the truth. Eventually, Vixen tells the entire League the truth and is dismissed from the team’s active roster until they can get her powers under control. Zatanna is called to inspect the Totem but finds no answers aside from a vision of Vixen and the hero Animal Man trapped by a giant spider.

Vixen and Animal Man later find they’ve been absorbed into the Totem by the story god Kwaku Anansi, who reveals he’s been manipulating their lives. He initially claims to have done so simply for his own amusement. But after he alters reality and drops Mari into a world with a new, altered Justice League, only for her to make her way back to him with these new heroes in tow, he returns everything – including her powers – to normal. Though her normal abilities were restored, this lapse in communication nearly cost the Justice League their lives. Not only was she putting them at risk by siphoning powers without their knowledge, but they ended up in the crosshairs of a reality-warping god. When Anansi turned the altered JLA against their new ally, Vixen, her real teammates were forced to fight an alternate version of the Justice League. Becoming a pawn in Anansi’s game wasn’t her fault, but keeping her teammates in the dark was.

Poor teamwork aside, this alteration could open up a lot of story potential if it ever appeared again. While her abilities would leave the others vulnerable, it could’ve been a huge tactical advantage for the Justice League if she’d disclosed the changes from the beginning. It works for the X-Men with Synch in their new lineup, and it could’ve done wonders for the Justice League. With this story setting Mari up as the champion for a pantheon of deities, it puts Vixen next to characters like Shazam or even Wonder Woman in terms of mystical and mythological potential.

Mari may have become a one-woman League, but nobody can carry that sort of responsibility on their back forever. And though her secret endangered her team, Mari still made things right, even in a world without the heroes she knew. Fans haven’t seen much more of her mythological potential tapped since this storyline, but this adventure more than justified the inclusion of Vixen in the Justice League – even without borrowing her peers’ powers.
