It’s said that mangaka spend most of their days stuck in-doors writing and drawing manga, but it seems that Eiichiro Oda of One Piece fame might be getting more sun than anyone realized, as there are Pokémon Go references in the most recent issue of the series.

Meltan is a rare example of a Pokémon that made its first playable appearance outside of the mainline video games. Players first encountered Meltan in Pokémon Go and they could later transfer it into the Pokémon Let’s Go! games and Pokémon Sword & Shield.

It seems that Oda is more of a fan of the Pokémon franchise than anyone realized. According to Game Rant, a Meltan appeared in the most recent chapter of One Piece, which can be read for free on VIZ. It can be seen sitting on the shoulder of Captain Kidd on the first page of the issue and it jumps off on the second page when he punches Apoo.

The appearance of Meltan isn’t totally out of the blue, as Oda has been including these kinds of background references in One Piece for years. Oda has joke characters who he likes to insert into pages, like Pandaman, Pandawoman, and Tomato Gang, seemingly for his own amusement (and to give eagle-eyed fans a reason to analyze each chapter). Meltan is a rare example of a character from another property appearing in One Piece, but its appearance is subtle enough that no one at The Pokémon Company is likely to object.

It’s possible that Oda has had more of a chance to play Pokémon Go during the lockdown, as Niantic has changed elements of the game to make it playable from home. It’s no secret that Oda has been taking a more relaxed schedule, which has led to One Piece moving to two-three issues a month, instead of four. The fans have been supportive of Oda’s decision to take a break, as his health is of paramount importance and should be put before One Piece. If Oda has been spending time catching Meltans with his family, then more power to him.
