Way before the WB Network became engrossed in the superhero lifestyle, they offered viewers a look into what it’s like growing up as a teen in America. From following teens coming of age (Dawson Creek) to rooting for witches (Charmed) and then the occasional teen rumor mill (Gossip Girl), teen dramas once ruled the Primetime slots.

What One Tree Hill did was take the reigns from Dawson Creek and made each storyline better. The characters were more diverse and each one offered a story of their own that drew fans even after the two main characters departed the show. But who was your favorite? Here are the top 10 fan favorite One Tree Hill characters.

10 Deb Scott

Despite the relationship drama on One Tree Hill, one thing that stayed constant throughout the storylines were strong women. Deb was the opposite of Karen. Deb had the husband, the kid who was well known and even the support of the community. But she still couldn’t avoid the pitfalls that came from being married to Dan. Once the truth came out about Lucas, Deb’s life was never the same.

Some of her decisions were not the best but even the strongest of people are allowed weak moments. She did her best to protect Nathan but even he turned his back as Deb dealt with addiction. She turned it around and made peace with the people she hurt in the process.

9 Karen Roe

How could you not root for Karen? She was the young lady who had her heartbroken by the town’s ‘Mr. Everything’. She was stuck raising a child by herself and most of all had to keep the identity of his father a secret. There were only a few who knew and even they were forced to keep it to themselves. Karen never asked for anything and was possibly the strongest character on the show.

She held a grudge not only against Dan but the majority of the town. All she wanted was to give Lucas a fair shot at life without any of the distractions that came with being a Scott. She owned her own business, found love with Keith, had a child, lost Keith then found happiness again.

8 Whitey Durham

Whitey, the glue of the entire town, watched as the kids became parents had kids of their own all the while still giving them some much-needed advice. When the students had issues off the court or off school grounds, it was Whitey who offered a helping hand and word. While everyone steered clear of Dan, Whitey often gave him an ear full when he was out of line.

While the Scott boys bickered each season, Whitey pulled them together as a team and as family. A widower, Whitey dealt with his wife’s absence the only way he could: giving his all for the residents of Tree Hill.

7 Keith Scott

The younger brother of Dan Scott fought his own demons while trying to maintain a relationship with his nephew and his mother. Keith was the do-good brother who got the short end of the stick. His battles with Dan were legendary as Keith often tried to convince Dan to do the right thing concerning Lucas. Keith was the town’s auto mechanic but he had everyone’s respect where Dan used scare tactics to get his.

As a result of having a good heart, he would often find himself in tight situations like the one where he lost his life. Keith’s death was a huge blow to One Tree Hill. While his memory lived on, through Lucas, Karen, his baby and then Dan, his absence left a void that was never filled.

6 Haley James-Scott

The quiet girl who never wanted to be in the “in crowd” somehow became the leader of the “in crowd”. In what was supposed to be a tutoring session for her and a payback option for Nathan blossomed into the best relationship on One Tree Hill. Haley stole Nathan’s heart with her kindness and she returned the favor by breaking his.

Haley was not that innocent. As the show grew, she turned around just in time to not only save her marriage but Nathan as well. Haley tried her hand in music but knew that Tree Hill was where her heart was. She stuck by Nathan through his bad times and dealt with the backlash with a level of maturity that proved she was worth all the fuss and near-death experiences he went through while she was absent.

5 Peyton Sawyer

Peyton started out the girlfriend who just seemed to be wasting her time with the popular guy. From the very beginning, Peyton’s light always shined brighter than Nathan’s. What was missing for her was that someone who was willing to burn with the same intensity. Although they went to school together, for some reason she never noticed that Lucas shared that same light.

Peyton was often left alone to fend for herself. Her mother had passed away and her dad was always away for work. Lost in her own thoughts, Peyton took to art and music as an escape. That was until Lucas came along and they changed each other’s lives for the better.

4 Brook Davis

Labeled as the “fast girl” of Tree Hill, Brook had plenty of growing up to do. With dreams of being a fashion designer, Brook’s struggles in school and her personal life could be traced back to an unstable home. Dealing with so much deceit at home, left Brook often alone and searching for acceptance elsewhere.

She made her fair share of mistakes but tried her best to atone for them. Her best move was trying to adopt Sam. At first, it was a struggle as Brook often looked at Sam and saw herself. Her trust in men was often shaken, however, in Julian, she found one she could trust and was willing to risk it all for love.

3 Dan Scott

Every good drama needs a villain and Dan Scott played that role to perfection. He knew who Lucas was and was well aware of the pain he caused Karen. He didn’t care for any advice that came his way and believed he was above the law. Killing his brother was not his turning point but it broke his character down and made Dan realize that he was just like everyone else.

He didn’t do a complete 180 but he tried to salvage a few relationships. He and Lucas shared a strange bond but one person he did love was his grandson Jamie. In the end, Dan did the things he did to protect his sons and he even tried to make amends with the ghost of Keith.

2 Nathan Scott

Before we had a chance to know Dan, Nathan was actually the first official villain of the show. Nathan hated Lucas for no good reason. Even knowing they were brothers only made the situation worse. Nathan had to be the mini version of how Dan was in high school and was well on his way to becoming the adult version until Haley stepped in. Once he accepted his role as the little brother, gave in to Haley and saw his father for the demon he was, Nathan thrived.

He would go onto face serious choices in life and some that even challenged his will to live. But in the end, that same stubbornness he displayed in the first two seasons is what allowed him to become a better son, husband, brother, and friend.

1 Lucas Scott

Lucas is the one who brought both sides of Tree Hill together. Considered an outcast and the bastard child, it was Lucas who took on the snobbish side of the community and let them know that he was ready to take on their world plus prove to his half brother and dad he was no longer willing to stand in the shadows.

Lucas’ journey into adulthood didn’t begin until he was able to put his issues with Dan aside. He married Peyton, had a beautiful daughter and drove away from Tree Hill a happy man.
