OnePlus will reportedly announce a new mid-range smartphone under its Nord line that will be powered by a MediaTek processor. The phone, which will launch as the Nord 2 CE, will be its second smartphone to be powered by a chipset from the Taiwanese semiconductor company. It is expected to arrive in early 2022 with an affordable price tag.
In its eight years of existence, OnePlus has only launched one smartphone that is not powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. That phone is the Nord 2, the second phone in its premium mid-range line and a successor to the OnePlus Nord announced in 2020. The Nord 2, among its upgrades, swapped out the Snapdragon 765G for the Dimensity 1200 chipset. OnePlus even went further by customizing the MediaTek chipset to offer better AI performance than the standard version of the chipset.
After the launch of the OnePlus Nord, a phone designed to provide a premium flagship experience at an affordable price, OnePlus announced another phone dubbed the OnePlus Nord CE (where CE stands for Core Edition). This phone announced in June 2021 kept the “core features” people loved from the first-gen Nord and mashed it with toned-down features in other areas and a lower price. The upcoming Nord 2 CE should follow the same blueprint with great features at an even more affordable price tag. The specifications of the smartphone have now surfaced and just like the Nord 2, it too will replace the Snapdragon processor with a MediaTek one. The details were provided by the Indian leaker Yogesh Brar (@itsyogesh) in collaboration with 91Mobiles. According to the source, the phone will have a Dimensity 900 processor under its hood. The 6nm 5G chip was announced in May 2021 and is more powerful than the Snapdragon 765G inside the Pixel 5a.

A Cheaper OnePlus Nord 2
The Nord 2 CE is reported to have the model number “IV2201” and codenamed “Ivan.” It will have an AMOLED screen that measures 6.4-inches with a 1080p resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The MediaTek chipset will be paired with up to 12GB of RAM and buyers will be able to choose between 128GB and 256GB of storage. The phone will have a 64MP main camera but it may not be able to match the 50MP camera on the Nord 2. It will also have an 8MP ultrawide angle camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 16MP front-facing camera. OnePlus will give it the same 4500mAh battery and 65W fast charging support as the OnePlus Nord 2.
Other areas OnePlus is reported to have cut corners to make the Nord 2 CE cheaper are in the use of plastic for the frame and the removal of the much-loved Alert Slider. The phone will be protected by Gorilla Glass on both sides. It will also have stereo speakers and even boasts a 3.5mm audio jack unlike the Nord 2. When it launches in the first quarter of 2022, it will run OxygenOS 12 based on Android 12 out of the box. The phone should be sold first in India, but like the Nord CE, it may not make its way to North America.
