A conflict recently sparked a feud between a game director and a journalist from IGN over an article published on Inverse. The piece tracked the evolution of God of War from the 2005 hack and slash title to 2018’s more narrative-heavy installment. It ended up getting a little messy.

The article written on Inverse by Mo Mozuch actually showered 2018’s God of War with praise, complimenting the game for its maturing over 2005’s God of War, which was comparably thinner in narrative and less complex than the soft reboot. In the process, it criticized 2005’s God of War for its simplistic approach to Greek mythology by celebrating “violent, misogynistic, single-minded vengeance.”

The article was not received well by the director of the original God of War, David Scott Jaffe, who took to Twitter to clarify that Kratos was never meant as a misogynist. He then criticized gaming journalists for reading these elements into 2005’s God of War, which sparked a conflict between him and IGN Executive Editor of Reviews Dan Stapleton.

This started a long thread of back and forth argumentation over the title of “journalist.” Jaffe commented that it may have been more accurate for him to use the word “tabloid” or “hack” before “journalist.” However, Stapleton was ultimately more critical of Jaffe’s critique of journalists in his use of quotes to potentially degrade the credibility of gaming journalists who wrote similar articles about God of War.

Overall, Jaffe’s claim is understandable. Feeling misrepresented could easily be frustrating, especially to anyone who designed a perhaps wrongfully analyzed work. Intentions sometimes don’t line up with responses that may spring up years later.

However, Stapleton’s defense of gaming journalism, and journalism altogether, is important to note since sarcastic quotes aren’t necessarily used for other job titles held by those some may think are performing poorly. It is one thing to critique and counter one’s views, but it is another to condescend, which was Stapleton’s point.

There is a level of credibility to the article written on Inverse, since 2018’s God of War is vastly more complex than the 2005 original, though the intentions of the first game may not be as toxic as the end result is now perceived to be.
