As many longtime fans will attest to, the original 151 Pokemon are widely considered to be the best generation of Pocket Monsters ever conceived. While that topic is up for debate, Game Freak realizes that Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle still hold a place in the hearts of everyone who played 1998’s Pokemon Red and Blue for GameBoy. At least, that much became clear when Nintendo and The Pokemon Company announced that trainers would be able to select a Kanto starter in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y.

When players boot up their copy of the next core Pocket Monster title later next month, they’ll be able to select one of the new starter Pokemon (Fennekin, Froakie, or Chespin), but they’ll also be given the opportunity to choose one of the original starters. It was revealed that trainers will actually receive their first Pokemon from a friend during the games’ story, and will be able to select either Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle from Pokemon X and Y’s Professor Sycamore shortly afterwards.

Accompanying this news was the confirmation that the final forms of the Kanto originals will be receiving Mega Evolutions. That’s right, Mega Charizard, Mega Venasaur, and Mega Blastoise are no longer just a long gestating thought, as each player will now have a chance to add any of them to their respective team.

Game Freak also went into more detail about Pokemon X and Y’s Mega Evolutions, stating that trainers would need an item known as a Mega Ring (along with a Key Stone) to push their creatures past their final forms. This newly unveiled accessory interacts with the previously detailed Mega Stones that each monster can obtain, and will effectively unlock that coveted ‘Mega’ forename and corresponding form that fans are so excited about.

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y will be hitting Nintendo 3DS this October 12th.
