The hit STARZ historical romance Outlander is known for its beguiling characters. The series revolves around the escapades of the time traveler Claire Fraser with the dashing 18th century Scottish Highlander Jamie Fraser.

Jamie might not be as central to the narrative as Claire but he is essential to this epic tale of love and adventure, the most important character after Claire herself, and of course, an instant fan-favorite. However, would the fans say they know everything about him? Here are some little details that even the most hardcore fans might not have noticed.

10 Jamie’s Son is Named After His Brother

Not everyone would remember this but Jamie also had a son with Geneva Dunsany. Back in season 3, the viewers saw Dunsany blackmail Jamie into sleeping with her after uncovering his identity as Red Jamie. Given that she was the daughter of Lord Dunsany, whom he worked for at the time, he couldn’t exactly refuse. From this liaison, Jamie discovered that she was pregnant.

Jamie’s illegitimate son was named William, and fans might remember that Jamie’s older brother who had died young was also called William. In fact, Jamie even carved a toy snake out of wood for his son in memory of a similar one his brother had made for him.

9 He Threw Claire Off A Horse

The incredibly handsome James Fraser is every woman’s heartthrob. But when he was first introduced to Claire, he wasn’t quite as mature as he has become over the years.

In the pilot, “Sassenach,” when Claire rode with Jamie on their way to Castle Leoch, the Highlanders were ambushed by a group of redcoats. Right before charging ahead, Jamie literally threw Claire off his horse, presumably to keep her from harm’s way. Still, he wouldn’t have dared to do that by the time the series had reached season 5.

8 His Dad Died Of Apoplexy

The sight of his son being tortured possibly caused Brian to have a stroke or a cerebral hemorrhage of some sort leading him to finally die of apoplexy.

7 Jamie Changed Fergus’ Name

Jamie hired young Fergus from Maison Elise when he and Claire were in Paris trying to put a stop to the events that would eventually spark the Jacobite rebellion and the Battle of Culloden.

Fan-favorite Fergus was a pickpocket at the Maison Elise where Jamie met with Charles Stuart to discuss Scotland’s impending future. At this time, he hired Fergus to steal confidential information that he couldn’t otherwise lay his hands on. Fergus’s real name was Claudel but Jamie considered it too effeminate and decided to call him Fergus.

6 He Might Travel Astrally

Some die-hard fans might remember the spooky apparition that appeared before Claire’s window during that rainy night of Samhain in Inverness in 1946.

Now, what everyone might not know is that there are speculations that this dark figure that Frank Randall saw outside Claire’s window was really Jamie Fraser projecting himself astrally through time. This can be further evidenced by Jamie somehow knowing about a mark on Brianna’s neck even before ever having met her.

5 The First To Be Cast

The charming Sam Heughan has won hearts with his portrayal of the dashing Scottish Highlander. However, one little known detail is that Heughan was literally the first to be cast for the show even though the producers wanted to take their time to choose the perfect James Fraser.

However, after having auditioned him, the show’s producers and creators knew at once that they had found their Jamie and Heughan went on to be cast for the role of the handsome Highlander.

4 The Fiery Redhead? Not So Much

Speaking of Heughan, how many fans know that the fiery redhead isn’t a redhead at all?

Although one of Jamie’s most distinctive characteristics is his flaming red hair, the actor who plays him isn’t a natural redhead. Heughan is a natural blonde and has to dye his hair to give it the vibrant red color that Jamie Fraser is known for.

3 Ahead Of His Time

Jamie might have lived in the 18th century but he was an open-minded man with quite a modern view of the world. This detail about him is easy to miss seeing how Claire completely overshadows him in a modern world view.

However, in his own way, Jamie appreciates Claire’s rejection of most of the social customs of the time. Of course, he supports her out of love and respect as well, but had he not had a broad intellectual capacity himself, he might not have supported Claire in her rebellion against so many socially and culturally prevalent practices of the time. Yet, from the witch trials to the inhuman slave trade, Jamie knew that Claire was right to be repulsed each time.

2 Jamie Appears Younger & In Scottish Attire In Claire’s Fantasy

During this traumatic ordeal, Claire dissociated into a fantastical world in the 20th century where her entire family had gathered around her, including Murtagh, Jocasta, Fergus and Marsali, and Jamie. The detail that fans might have missed here is that while most of the others looked their age in Claire’s fantasy, Jamie was the only one who looked younger than he was at the time.

The Jamie in Claire’s dream was the young redhead prior to the Battle of Culloden and not the older, often bespectacled one of the later seasons. Moreover, all the others were dressed in modern Western clothing in this fantasy while Jamie alone wore his traditional Highlands shirt.

1 Possibly Based On A Real Person

Finally, one little detail that everyone would have missed is that James Alexander Malcolm McKenzie Fraser was probably modeled on a real historical figure.

Rumor has it that Jamie was based on an actual Scottish soldier during the Jacobite rebellion who had survived the Battle of Culloden, also a Fraser called Simon Lovet. It seems author Diana Gabaldon who wrote the novels which were then adapted into the hit fantasy drama, took inspiration from history to create one of the pivotal characters of her narrative.
