The hit fantasy romance Outlander revolves around the feisty central protagonist Claire Fraser as she traverses time and ends up with a dashing Scottish Highlander in 18th century Scotland and then various other countries around the world.

The series has a range of other female characters apart from Claire, each with a distinct personality of her own. From the scheming and mean to the fearless and spirited, here are ten powerful and well-developed female characters in the series.

10 Mary McNab

Mary McNab was a housekeeper at the Murrays in Lallybroch when Jamie went back to them after the Battle of Culloden. Mary was a widow whose son Rabbie grew up with Jenny’s kids.

She helped around the house and aided Jenny and Murray to keep the land. Mary showed uncommon courage when she gave up the weapon that the boys – Fergus, Ian, and the others – had fired to the redcoats. She lied to save the entire household and had she been caught in the lie, the consequences might have been dire.

9 Louise

Louise was the woman who helped Claire navigate the elite Parisian society in season 2. She was a free spirit and could explore her body and sexuality without being bogged down by so-called social etiquette.

Louise was shown to be a true friend – she came to Claire’s aid when the latter was driven to the brink of losing her mind after her first daughter, Faith was stillborn. Louise conducted clandestine affairs of her own and although the French society at the time was far from morally perfect, it took courage and strength of character to traverse those rather tricky waters all the time.

8 Mother Hildegarde

The sweet Mother Hildegarde was like a mother figure to Claire while in Paris. She appreciated Claire’s natural talents to heal and help people and even went as far as to baptize Claire’s dead baby in spite of that being against practice.

The elderly nun was a pillar of strength in her own way, one of the few people putting herself out there for the poor and the needy in a society that was otherwise steeped in dissipation.

7 Marsali

Marsali was Fergus’ wife and Laoghaire’s older daughter. She was, however, nothing like her mother, being neither mean nor scheming.

She, justifiably, held Claire at arm’s length at first, for, after all, the latter did her mother wrong from her perspective. But she warmed up to her soon enough, even starting to admire her; she was a straightforward, spirited woman and a strong wife to young Fergus with a mind of her own.

6 Geillis Duncan

Geillis might have had a bizarre sense of right and wrong, but despite her scheming, manipulative nature, she was no doubt one of the strongest women on the show.

Geillis Duncan might have thought nothing of killing her various husbands at various times – time here actually referring to entire periods across centuries – but she did readily sacrifice herself to save Claire from the witch-burning, and that took a rare strength of character. She was undoubtedly a resourceful woman, making her powerful enough to be the chief antagonist of the third season.

5 Mary Hawkins

Mary was the petite little woman who was forced to marry Black Jack Randall, following her lover Alex’s death. She was also the one who gave birth to Frank Randall’s direct ancestor, thus being crucial to Claire and Frank’s story.

Mary was a nervous young girl when Claire first met her but life and circumstances had soon made her more mature. She survived a sexual assault and with uncharacteristic strength of mind, murdered the person who had raped her.

4 Jocasta Cameron

Jocasta was Ellen Fraser’s sister and Jamie’s aunt. She had left home at a young age and by the time the audience met her, she was reigning supreme over acres and acres of plantation land in North Carolina.

She was highly respected in society and had made her place in a world where men generally held sway. She did clash horns rather subtly with Claire the first time they met for the two had rather different world views, but Jocasta’s perspective was conditioned by the times she lived in. She was a powerful woman in her own way, and one of the few matriarchs in the series.

3 Brianna Fraser

Brianna initially started out as a charmingly innocent young girl but soon became someone who knew how to take charge of her own life.

She was strong and courageous enough to take matters into her own hands when she traveled through the stones, in search of her parents. Like Mary Hawkins, Brianna too was a survivor of sexual abuse and evolved from something of a pretty face to a woman of steely determination.

2 Jenny Fraser

Jenny was the outspoken, headstrong older sister of Jamie Fraser. She was not prone to excessive shows of affection, but in her own way, she felt things deeply.

Jenny was, for all intents and purposes, in charge of the Frasers’ ancestral home of Lallybroch. She, along with her husband Ian, took care of their tenants and of the farmland. Jenny was perhaps not as sophisticated as Claire, or even Jacosta, but she was extremely strong, a brave abuse survivor, and a woman who spoke her mind.

1 Claire Fraser

It’s no surprise that the top rank would go to the heroine herself, the smart, empowered Claire Fraser who was also an accomplished surgeon. Given that the series chronicles Claire’s exploits, each episode is littered with examples of her bravery and quick wit.

From serving as a combat nurse in World War II to holding her own amidst a gang of wild, 18th century Scottish Highlanders, to becoming the only woman in her batch of medical students, to saving hundreds of men and women in the direst of circumstances, Claire’s strength, both as a person and a woman has been proved time and again. She is equal to Jamie in every sense, and perhaps even better than him, helping him to see things from her own, more modern perspective.
