Blizzard may not be announcing a new Hero for Overwatch 2 just yet, but it’s bringing in something that many will consider even better: a new dog. Overwatch 2 may not be coming out this year, but the promise of a new pet may help soften the blow — or make it worse.

Pets aren’t exactly a novel concept in the Overwatch universe: Orisa received a puppy during the Winter Wonderland event in 2017, Bastion has his bird companion Ganymede, and Brigitte is a confirmed cat-lover who cut her teeth on armor construction by building cardboard armor for her disgruntled childhood kitty (who, alas, would never take up the mantle as Jetpack Cat). Jeff Kaplan, the game’s director, remarked that Brigitte’s increased presence in Overwatch 2 will be bringing a lot more cats along with it. But in the same interview, Kaplan admitted that those cats needed a dog to balance everything out, so that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

In an interview with Gamespot, Kaplan alluded to a “big dog moment coming up” in Overwatch 2, but, true to his nature, kept fairly mum about the details surrounding the promised pooch. The only concrete details he gave so far was that the dog was not Orisa’s puppy, and is an entirely new dog. The pup will belong to one of the existing Heroes. It’s unclear who, although it’s likely not Brigitte, considering, again, she’s a cat person. The interview didn’t go into much else as far as new Overwatch 2 information, although more updates are expected in March and April, and instead focuses on Kaplan’s experiences with the feedback and responses the team has gotten about the game so far.

Of course, there are likely more than a few hardcore Overwatch fans who couldn’t care less about the dog, which they’ll undoubtedly see as a novelty and nothing more. They’ll probably dismiss the pooch in favor of more impactful news like AI allies and new game maps. But it’s unlikely that there will be any more Heroes announced for Overwatch 2 between now and its release in 2022, since Kaplan and his team are determined to make the game as perfect as possible, and a new Hero would likely delay the release even further. But Kaplan did promise more details about the game at this year’s Blizzcon, so for those who are more concerned about practical updates, expect more of those in the coming months.

And Kaplan did also promise that people will fall in love with the dog, although that’s just a moot point, because who doesn’t fall in love with dogs? Fans of man’s best friend will have a lot to look forward to when Overwatch 2 eventually releases.
