Pacific Region Removed From Overwatch Contenders Season 2

The Overwatch League has announced that the Pacific region will not return for Season 2 of Overwatch Contenders this year. The Pacific champion of Season 1, Talon Esports, will receive a direct invite to the Contenders Korea Trials instead. The Contenders are also currently “exploring ways to build a unique experience for Pacific players,” as well as planning to deliver more consistent broadcasts.

In Season 1, Overwatch Contenders employed a unified model across seven regions for the first half of 2020 and each region used a point-based tournament system. After listening to feedback from fans, teams, and players, Contenders decided to remove the Pacific region and “introduce a more flexible and diverse range of competition around the globe.”

Fans of the highly competitive South Korea region were disappointed in the broadcasting of Season 1 matches, as they were inconsistent for the first half of 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In response, Overwatch Contenders now intends to broadcast every Contenders South Korea match in Season 2.

Meanwhile, Gauntlet plans are still in the works and events will be coordinated around developments in the Covid-19 crisis. Despite the uncertainty, the goal is still for each region to qualify at least one team for the event. More information will be announced at a later date.

The Future of Pacific Teams In Overwatch Contenders

The removal of the Pacific region for Season 2 seems to be temporary. The Overwatch League has stated that they are developing plans for Pacific region events which involve $100k USD in tournament prizing. They also want to qualify at least one team from those events for the Gauntlet later this year.

In the meantime, Talon Esports may benefit from participating in the Contenders Korea Trials instead of the Pacific region.

Contenders South Korea alumni often go on to play in the Overwatch League, so players from Talon Esports may have an increased chance of going pro. With the plans for more consistent coverage of Contenders South Korea matches, they may also receive a greater fan following. However, the South Korea region is one of the most demanding in terms of players’ skills. Talon Esports may need more training to keep up with their South Korean peers.
