The latest edition of the Paper Mario franchise, Paper Mario: The Origami King, is the second best selling game of the week in Japan, but it’s not exactly living up to its legacy.

This version of Mario’s saga began 20 years ago on the N64 with Paper Mario, an RPG similar to Super Mario Bros. and the like. Mario is the protagonist, and using his skills and those of his partner’s, players must make their way through worlds of foes and puzzles. It’s a simple enough game, but the animation style is what sets it apart from the rest of the games featuring hero Mario Mario. The characters in this story are all two dimensional, as if cut out by paper, while the background are traditional 3D renderings that still have a papery look to them.

There are now six titles in the Paper Mario chronicle, released across each of the major Nintendo gaming systems: N64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and now the Switch. Paper Mario games have always done well across the board, but Paper Mario: The Origami King is not performing as anticipated—at least not in physical copies. After its first week in Japan Paper Mario: The Origami King is performing fifth among all of the Paper Mario titles, beating out only the Wii U game Paper Mario: Color Splash. While The Origami King has outperformed Color Splash by almost four times, it has fallen behind the original Paper Mario by 9,000 copies and the Wii’s Super Paper Mario by over 55,000. However, these numbers only represent physical copy sales, not digital downloads.

With the state of things around the world, digital has seen a huge surge and it’s likely that The Origami King sold the bulk of their games through the Switch eShop. The fact that it was beaten out in physical sales by one of the most highly anticipated games for the PS4, Ghost of Tsushima, could still be seen as a win for Nintendo and this two-decade-old franchise.
