Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is going 2D, as the next set of Spirits that will be added to the game are based on characters from Paper Mario: The Origami King.

The Super Smash Bros. series already has two different Marios (regular and Dr.), but many fans would be delighted if Paper Mario made his way into the game. Paper Mario is different enough from his 3D counterparts to justify a slot, and many attacks from his series could be repurposed in order to give him a unique moveset, rather than turning him into an Echo Fighter. There are still five slots left in the second Fighters Pass and the Switch received a Paper Mario game this year, so it’s possible that he could be added in the future.

There is currently no word regarding Paper Mario coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a DLC fighter, but characters from his latest adventure are arriving in the game as Spirits. According to the SmashBrosJP Twitter account, there will be three Spirits based on Paper Mario: The Origami King coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on August 28, where they can be battled and won over the course of five days.

The Twitter page has confirmed the identity of all of the Spirits. The first Spirit is Origami Princess Peach, who will be represented by Princess Peach, the second Spirit is Olivia, who be represented by Pikachu, and the third spirit is King Olly, who will be represented by Toon Link in his magenta tunic.

The Paper Mario: The Origami King Spirits will only be active on the Spirit Board for five days, but fans shouldn’t rush themselves if they are busy during that time. The exclusive event Spirits generally get added to the game permanently over time and will become available to purchase in the Shop. It’s likely that the Paper Mario: The Origami King Spirits will be added at a later date, especially as they belong to a first-party Nintendo franchise.

The Paper Mario: The Origami King Spirits will appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for five days, starting from August 28, 2020.
