Parks & Recreation took viewers to the town of Pawnee, where the main characters lived through most of the series, but what does “Pawnee” mean? The last decade has seen a variety of sitcoms, and one of the most popular ones was Parks & Recreation, created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur. Parks & Recreation premiered on NBC in 2009 and lived on for seven seasons, coming to an end in 2015 after a lot of memorable moments and jokes.

Parks & Recreation followed the daily lives of the crew at the Parks Department in the town of Pawnee, Indiana, led by the always optimist Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). Over the course of seven seasons, viewers met Leslie’s coworkers and closest friends and got to know them quite well, and through all of them, the audience also got to know the colorful town of Pawnee. Leslie was always the first to hype up and defend Pawnee from anyone who dared say something bad about her beloved town (especially those coming from the rival town, Eagleton), and she even wrote a book about it, titled Pawnee: The Greatest Town in America.

The town of Pawnee is said to be located in south-central Indiana, 90 miles from Indianapolis and 35 miles past Bloomington, and it’s the state’s seventh-largest city – however, the location of Pawnee changes throughout Parks & Recreation, as does that of Eagleton. Pawnee might not be the richest town in the US, but it has everything its residents need to live a good life, though they are always compared to Eagleton and its wealthy lifestyle. Still, Leslie always had nothing but good things to say about her beloved town, but a big question remains: what does the name “Pawnee” really mean?

According to Leslie, in 1817, Reverend Luther Howell arrived at the land that would become Pawnee, which was already occupied by the Native American Wamapoke tribe. When choosing the right name for a place like that, Howell wanted to call it “paradise”, but he was a “functional illiterate”, and he couldn’t spell the word properly, so he wrote “Pawnee” instead. Pawnee isn’t exactly what many would call a “paradise” (and especially Ron Swanson would disagree with the name), and history says that the wealthiest and most prominent citizens fled to the west after finding Pawnee’s soil untenable and the smell unpleasant. These citizens went on to found Eagleton, which is on top of a hot spring and thus allows the growing of plants that other nearby cities can’t have. Eagleton could be more of a “paradise” than Pawnee, but Leslie would argue that, in big part, what makes Pawnee so great is its people.

Pawnee definitely wouldn’t be the same without characters like Leslie, Ron Swanson, Tom Haverford, April Ludgate, and more, and while some of them left town at some point, they helped build Pawnee’s public image. Parks & Recreation had one of the most memorable settings thanks to Pawnee, and the meaning and story behind the town’s name only add to its peculiar history and colorful citizens.
