Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 has been affected by COVID-19, but there shouldn’t be “a big impact in the long term,” according to the game’s producer.

It might be easy to forget in some parts of the world, but there’s still a global pandemic going on, and one that has hit Japan just the same as everywhere else. Well, maybe not quite the same as the US or Brazil, but Japan has still instituted common-sense policies like wearing masks and working from home wherever possible.

The sudden switch to working from home has been a bit of a blow to developers at Square Enix, but it hopefully won’t cause too much of a delay with the upcoming sequel to this year’s wildly successful Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

“At this current time, the team are still making the next game via remote working. Our performance will temporarily drop below 100% efficiency because of this, but I do not think there should be a big impact in the long term,” said game producer Yoshinori Kitase in an interview with The Guardian. “I sincerely hope that Final Fantasy 7 Remake can provide those who are forced to endure the stress of living under lockdown a moment of relief and enjoyment in these trying times.”

In a wide-ranging interview, Kitase discussed the impact of COVID-19, but also why Remake’s story takes a few turns from the original source material. One of those turns was just how much more we get to see of Midgar, a place that seemed to serve as the initial game’s tutorial section, but has since become a game unto itself in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

“Our vision was to dive much deeper into the world and its characters than ever before,” said Kitase. “In doing this we have expanded upon the eclectic city of Midgar, building upon the structure of the city, and showing the lives of the residents in greater detail.”

Kitase notes that Shinra and the Turks were never fully explained in the first game, so they tried to expand their portrayal in Remake. Now when the Turks show up in later games, players will have a much better explanation as to why they seem to keep harrying Cloud and his friends.

Unfortunately, Kitase was tight-lipped about what we can expect in Part 2, but he did say that Sephiroth will play “a major part” in the sequel.
