Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has a strange design choice, where players can choose the religious beliefs of their animal companions, with atheism being a selectable option. Wrath of the Righteous uses the rules from the first edition of the Pathfinder tabletop RPG, which itself was an adaptation of the third edition Dungeons & Dragons rules.

In Pathfinder, there are classes that can possess animal companions as one of their features. The Druid is one of the best-known examples of an animal companion user, as it’s one of the options available at level one, as part of the Nature Bond feature. The animal companion grows stronger as the Druid gains levels, which is why the Druid is such a strong class, as it’s also a primary spellcaster with special abilities. The Cavalier and the Paladin are also known for their animal companions, in the form of the mounts that they ride into battle.

Wrath of the Righteous lets the player have animal companions, with some of them even being mountable, allowing characters to charge into battle. The player also has the ability to stat out their animal companion, leading to one of the most confusing decisions in the game.

Animal Companions Can Be Atheists

The character creation process in Wrath of the Righteous involves several steps, which include selecting a class, race, and feats. One of the choices involves selecting a deity from the list of gods that appear in the Golarion campaign setting. Animal companions in Wrath of the Righteous have their own character creation screen, and for some reason, the player can also select a deity for them. One of the choices on the deity list is atheist, which in real life, refers to someone who doesn’t believe in the existence of god. In Pathfinder, it refers to someone who doesn’t have much of an opinion of the gods and doesn’t let the affairs of the divine interfere in their daily life.

This means that a Wrath of the Righteous player can have an atheist animal companion in their party. The Cavalier can have a mighty warhorse that has no regard for the gods, while the Druid’s dinosaur could perhaps have more of a belief in science – even though angels, demons, devils, and the gods themselves are known to appear in public places in Pathfinder.
