E-Line Media’s upcoming game Beyond Blue has been described as a “playable documentary” that lets gamers explore the vast world beneath the oceans of the world. While the description is accurate, early gameplay reveals a stunning underwater simulator that will allow players to experience a world they may only have dreamed of until now.

Players take on the role of Mirai, a deep-water explorer and scientist in the not so distant future. Along with their research team, players will have access to ground-breaking technology that can provide unique ways to see, hear, and interact with the ocean. Once in the water, players will experience a well-developed narrative, exploration of places that often remain unseen, and challenges that require high-stakes decision making. Without a doubt, this looks to be a great addition to PAX East at the end of the month.

Players should be in for a real treat here, as E-Line is an experienced developer with a proven track record of high-quality work in the past. The group was responsible for creating Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna), the narrative, atmospheric platformer from 2014 that today holds a “Very Positive” score on Steam with over four thousand reviews.

Not only that, but E-Line has also partnered with BBC studios, developers of Blue Planet II, and the thematic parallels between the two are evident. Finally, several leading ocean experts have been consulted in order to create an overall experience that is true to the real-world conditions that explorers face when heading into the unknown depths of the ocean.

A detailed look at what the game has to offer can be seen in the video below where two developers discuss exactly what lies in store for players. Long stretches of coral, schools of different types of fish, and massive, imposing whales litter the underwater landscape, and make Beyond Blue one of the best upcoming simulators to look forward too.

One of the more interesting points of the video lies in how the player will experience the UI. Moving Mirai’s point of view to focus on one location, or on a whale for example, brings up an information box on the right side of the screen. Sometimes this is populated with information, but at other times, it is blank with question marks in place of data.

It seems that players will need to explore not only locations, but also find a way to effectively, and safely, scan the wildlife in the ocean to compile a complete database of information. We can only speculate at this point, but even this early educated guess looks like a great experience that no player should miss out on.

Beyond Blue is slated for a release soon, listed as February 2020 for Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and mobile.
