Penny Arcade creators Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins have always worked to create a warm, welcoming environment for all attendees at PAX conventions, and are now going a step further at PAX South 2020 with initiatives celebrating the Latinx community. A range of diverse developers will be featured at the annual celebration of gaming culture at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio from January 17-19.

Latinx in Gaming will host the Latinx Lounge, which will be a dedicated inclusive space with workshops, tournaments, networking opportunities, and three days of panels, some which will be in Spanish. There will also be eight showcased international games. The entire initiative is supported by Microsoft, Twitch, Unity, and Red Bull.

Some of the participating Latinx developers will include Mecha Studio, Level 99 Games, Navegante, Broadstrokes, Seashell Studio, The Stonebot Studio, HyperBeard Games, and Streamline Games. Panelists will include members of BioWare, Microsoft, Gearbox Publishing, Ready at Dawn, and other places, all who will cover personal and professional topics central to the Latinx community.

The move comes as part of the ongoing commitment from PAX Together to elevate all creators and fans by promoting diversity and inclusion. This means providing these dedicated spaces for advocacy groups and marginalized game developers from a wide range of backgrounds an opportunity to stand out from the crowd and share their games with PAX attendees. Other developers featured on the show floor include Kitfox Games, Strange Scaffold, Rose City Games, and more. PAX Together is supported by Houston Gaymers and Red Bull.

The move towards inclusiveness of diversity comes at an important moment in American culture, where divisiveness and hatred has resulted in terrible violence directed at people of Latin America descent. In August of this year the El Paso shooting was a Right-wing act of terrorism after a man posted a white nationalist manifesto with anti-immigrant themes shortly before entering a Walmart Supercenter with a semi-automatic weapon. The attack left 22 people dead and 24 injured, with the location chosen to target Mexicans, as stated by the attacker.

The creation of a Latinx Lounge at PAX 2020 may seem like a small and insignificant move considering such a tragic event, and yet PAX is leading the way with exactly the type of behavior that can prevent such hatred from growing. By providing an inclusive space for groups that are marginalized, there is a greater potential for understanding and a forum for shared experiences.

The complete PAX South 2020 schedule and exhibitor list is now available via Guidebook through the PAX Mobile App for iOS and Android and the official PAX website. Three-day badges for the event are available now for $95, with single-day badges available for $45.
