The popular Star Wars show The Mandalorian may be getting more comfortable with showing Din Djarin’s face, but actor Pedro Pascal claims that he doesn’t necessarily need more helmet-free appearances. The Disney+ series surprised fans last week with an episode that involved Din removing his helmet and showing his face, and that episode has sparked discussions among fans about whether the hero will continue to remove his mask regularly.

The idea that the Mandalorian might take off his helmet more in future seasons has been a popular one. Part of this comes from viewers not being used to not seeing an actor’s face, especially a lead actor like Pascal. Even though Pascal’s appearance is no secret, the manufactured secrecy within The Mandalorian is intriguing for fans. Some fans have gone so far as to determine every potential loophole that would allow Mando to remove his helmet. Among all this fan speculation, some rumors have surfaced that Pascal himself may want to remove his helmet more on the show.

In an interview on the British talk show The One Show (via Aaron Corr), Pascal actually denied these rumors. The actor explains that while the Mandalorian taking off his helmet is a fun and dramatic idea in the show, he understands that it has to serve the story first. “That is not true actually. It’s a really wonderful way of telling the story. It’s always been a very clear creed for the character, and the collaborative process of the whole thing has been, we’ve all been on the same page with this, I think. So I, you know, what I want is for them to make the best show possible, however they get that done.

Despite Mando’s strong commitment to his helmet, there have been a few instances in The Mandalorian where Pascal has gotten to show off his face. But in keeping with Pascal’s statement, every instance of helmet removal has been narratively significant. There was the most recent episode where Din had to remove his helmet to help complete his mission to save Grogu, but the Mandalorian has also removed his helmet to receive essential medical attention.

Overall, the specific codes surrounding the Mandalorian’s helmet don’t actually matter. As Pascal explains, what matters is the narrative purpose the helmet serves. The helmet is a vehicle for exploring themes of duty and cultural identity, not just a gimmick for hiding an actor’s face. The Mandalorian understands that the helmet is a valuable tool for storytelling, and whether the fans want more helmet or less helmet, the show is only going to do what makes sense for the story.
