Popular exercise equipment company, Peloton, has issued a statement after being depicted in the fictional death of a prominent character in HBO Max’s And Just Like That… The Sex and the City revival has only just premiered as of this writing, but the series begins with what is arguably one of the most shocking events to take place in the franchise’s history. Typically known for its light and humorous nature, the death scene kills off a very popular character.

When the return of Sex and the City was first announced last year, the major focus was that Kim Cattrall, who played fan-favorite Samantha Jones, wouldn’t be returning. This inevitably led some to surmise that the character would be killed off in the new series, much to the dismay of long-time fans. However, in the weeks and months leading up to the release of And Just Like That… it became clear that Samantha’s absence wouldn’t be explained by killing her character off. Nonetheless, the fact that the character remains alive and well in the world of Sex and the City unfortunately didn’t mean that one of the program’s most prominent characters couldn’t take their final bow when And Just Like That… premiered.

In what is sure to be a shock for Sex and the City fans, John Big (Chris Noth) succumbs to a heart attack in the opening moments of And Just Like That…, making his wife Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) a widow. The incident occurs while Big is home alone, exercising on his Peloton – a popular stationary exercise bicycle. After Carrie returns home to discover him on the floor, Big tragically dies in her arms. The move is a big one for the franchise – so much so, that Peloton felt the need to distance themselves from any negative implications that the death might cause. As BuzzFeed News reports, a member of Peloton’s health and safety council, Suzanne Steinbaum, has officially stated:

“I’m sure SATC fans, like me, are saddened by the news that Mr. Big dies of a heart attack. Mr. Big lived what many would call an extravagant lifestyle — including cocktails, cigars, and big steaks — and was at serious risk as he had a previous cardiac event in Season 6. These lifestyle choices and perhaps even his family history, which often is a significant factor, were the likely cause of his death. Riding his Peloton Bike may have even helped delay his cardiac event.”

Peloton had originally been contacted by HBO in order to secure the necessary licensing, and the company was aware that a Peloton bicycle would be used in the episode, but it was not made clear (due to confidentiality issues) that the bike would be used to kill off a major character. Unfortunately, this incident has taken its toll on shares in Peloton, which dropped almost $5 in the wake of Big’s fictional death. As absurd as it is to assume that the death of a fictional TV character on a Peloton bike represents a real-life risk, the exercise company now finds itself rushing to perform damage control with regard to its products.

As for Sex and the City fans, Big’s death represents a major plot twist very early on in And Just Like That… The new series has painted itself into a tight corner by killing the character off so early on, and given Carrie’s deep love for Big, it’s hard to imagine how she’ll be able to move past it and focus on anything else throughout the entire season. Still, after the initial shock dissipates among fans, it could become clear that the death of Big allows for a new direction in the lives of characters who are meant to be facing life’s challenges head on.
