There is currently a competition running to see who can get banned from the US Army Esports Discord channel the fastest.

The US Army has been in the world of gaming for some time. It’s an ideal space to find recruits, what with the popularity of Call of Duty and all that. The Army even has its own Esports teams that compete in Call of Duty League.

The Army also has a social media presence that is “hip and with it,” as the kids say. They even engaged in a Twitter conversation with Discord, although it didn’t quite end in the way the Army wanted it.

It all started with Discord’s recent rebranding announcement. The US Army Esports Twitter account responded asking when they could get a “giant wumpus plushie” and demanded that it be Snorlax-sized. Discord said they’d look into it, to which the Army responded in the only appropriate way: “UwU.”

To be fair to the US Army Esports channel, the Army is very hands-off when it comes to their recruitment. So long as new soldiers keep coming in, they’re happy to let their social media handlers use whatever language they like, even if it’s not exactly in line with military protocol. However, some Twitter users felt that this response was yet another example of the Army’s blatant attempts at recruitment online, and they decided to let the Army know they weren’t happy about it.

Some merely responded with an acerbic retort, but others took it to the nth level by creating a new sport: who can get banned from the US Army Esports Discord channel the fastest. It’s Discord speedrunning at its finest, with the US Army as the playground.

Tactics involved posting anti-army jokes, memes, or just linking to the Wikipedia page regarding United States war crimes. One just posted a trans flag, which is apparently enough to get banned from the Army Discord–not to mention the Army itself.

Most bans were handed out in under 20 seconds, making the US Army Esports Discord moderators some of the best in the world. Which makes sense given how much of the US budget is spent on its military.

The chat has since been disabled for new users, so I guess mission accomplished?
