Netflix subscribers have watched a whopping two billion hours of Adam Sandler movies on the streaming service. It was recently revealed that, between June 2019 and June 2020, Sandler brought in $41 million. In large part, the actor’s earnings were attributed to his collaboration with Netflix.

The deal, which was first signed in 2015, was renewed back in January with the announcement that Sandler would continue making Netflix originals. Given the high viewership of movies like The Ridiculous 6, Murder Mystery, and Hubie Halloween, it’s hardly a surprise that the streaming giant would want to continue doing business with Sandler. With the help of new data though, we now know just how popular Sandler’s output has been.

According to Variety (via CinemaBlend), subscribers have spent an astonishing amount of time watching Sandler’s movies on Netflix. Since the premiere of The Ridiculous 6 in 2015, which was Sandler’s first Netflix original movie, audiences have watched a whopping two billion hours’ worth of the actor’s movies on the streaming service. The data comes on the heels of the announcement that Hubie Halloween is the most watched Netflix title in the U.S. for 2020. Overall, it came second only to the Polish drama 365 Days.

While the number might seem surprising at first, it is more understandable when looked at through the context of Sandler’s long career on the big screen. Although his comedies tend to be dismissed by critics, they generally perform well enough at box office. Particularly in overseas markets, Sandler is a draw. Even his lesser-known features, such as 2008’s You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, surpassed $200 million worldwide. Bedtime Stories, released the following year, provides another example. Made with an estimated budget of $80 million, the movie grossed more than $212 million in its final tally and was boosted by international ticket sales. The trend holds for several of Sandler’s other movies, which are often similarly budgeted. Given his track record, it stands to reason that Netflix would trust the actor to bring reliable viewership to their original productions.

Netflix has an added advantage that supports the types of movies which Sandler is known for making. Many of those who subscribe to the platform aren’t always looking to keep up with a buzzy series like Stranger Things or a high-concept action flick such as The Old Guard. Occasionally, as the data proves, it can be just as rewarding to watch a relatively scaled down comedy with a cast of familiar faces. Although that can be frustrating for fans hoping Sandler takes on dramatic roles more frequently, his more relaxed approach has proven to be immensely successful so far.
