Persona 5 Voice Actor Talks About Fans Shipping Romantic Relationships

Persona 5 voice actor Robbie Daymond has spoken about his character Goro Akechi and what he thinks of fans “shipping” him with other individuals from the series in a new interview. Shipping is a popular practice where fans will romantically link characters together who are not explicitly in a relationship and is often closely associated with fan fiction and fan art – as well as character-driven games like Persona.

Robbie Daymond plays a character called Goro Akechi in Persona 5 and the expanded edition Persona 5 Royale, which released earlier this year. Known as the Detective Prince, the character is a young, charismatic individual who helps the protagonist throughout the course of the story. Between both versions of the game, Akechi slowly becomes a more integral party to the story and interacts with the main character Joker frequently.

Voice actor Robbie Daymond has been speaking about his character in Persona 5 and what he thinks about fans shipping him with other characters in the series. Discussing the issue in an interview with The Gamer, Daymond explained that he is often asked about ships but that fans will “never get me to talk [directly] about a ship” and that he likes to “leave crumbs here and there, but I’m not gonna give away the whole sandwich!” However, the voice actor does enjoy the theories that players come up with between Goro Akechi and Joker as it shows how invested they are in the franchise. He went on to say that “fandoms are really great at grabbing on to little moments and using them to justify their ship” and that he is “all for it.” Daymond later opened up about how relationships in Persona might have more to them than is initially clear.

“I think that there is an element of romance in every relationship that’s not familial. I think people are attracted to each other in ways that aren’t necessarily definable. […] Relationships are complicated in real life, and [an actor’s] goal is to make fictional characters’ relationships complicated too.”

Originating with Revelations: Persona in 1996, the Persona has spawned more than a dozen sequels and spin-offs. While most of the games have been released in the West as well as Japan, some games have not yet been localized. Persona 5 Scramble is one such example, although recent reports suggest that the game will come to the US at some point in the future. As the series becomes more popular in the West, there have also been rumors that Persona 5 will eventually be ported to Nintendo Switch, thanks to a hint dropped in an interview with Atlus communications manager Ari Advincula.

Robbie Daymond’s willingness to discuss the Persona 5 fandom shipping his character demonstrates the enthusiasm that the voice actor has for the role he plays in the series. Daymond is seemingly interested in what fans have to say and wants to engage with them as much as possible. However, his decision to not definitively say whether such ships will ever come to pass in the game is likely a combination of him not wanting to spoil anything for players, not knowing what direction the writers will go in, and not wanting to crush fans’ hopes. Either way, his responses will almost certainly fuel more shipping in the future.
