After plenty of speculation last night, the Entertainment Software Association confirmed this morning that E3 2020 would be canceled. A huge blow to many that were looking forward to getting their games out there, it seems that not all hope is lost. Shortly after the confirmation of E3’s closure, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer (executive VP of gaming for Xbox) confirmed that the company will be holding some kind of digital event in the show’s absence.

“This year we’ll celebrate the next generation of gaming with the Xbox community and all who love to play via an Xbox digital event,” he wrote in a Tweet. The details for this event haven’t been finalized, though it will likely be held for when E3 was originally scheduled. The convention was to be held on June 9 – 11, so that seems like a good fit for this new Xbox event.

It’s hard to argue the diminishing presence of E3 in recent years. With Sony already confirming it wouldn’t be returning for a second year, it was only a matter of time before other companies made the jump. Microsoft had big plans to back the show, however, so E3’s cancelation was likely seen as a shock.

Still, with the advent of the internet, a digital event makes more sense. Microsoft can not only announce titles with complete anonymity, it can control how those trailers and demos are presented. There’s a good chance this event will see a ton of new demos for gamers to try as soon as games are revealed.

Microsoft has also dabbled with its streaming platform, Mixer, and E3 in the past few years. Fans that tuned in to watch press conferences were given free goodies and even games -Rare Replay was handed out a few years back-. Without having to produce a bunch of physical items, Microsoft could end up saving money while promoting the future of Xbox.

It’s still a little sad that gamings biggest convention won’t be happening, but there’s a lot of bright things on the horizon. Microsoft is taking the initiative and forging ahead with a new plan that could easily become the future of E3.
