Mario, Link and Zelda are not the only ones celebrating milestones, Pokemon has been gearing up for its 25th anniversary on Pokemon Day this February 27. Of course, The Pokemon Company is no stranger to special events, so this time it’s offering a one time chance for Pokemon Sword and Shield players to get their hands on a unique Pikachu.

Since Sword and Shield launched, the games have offered players certain event Pokemon that are available for a limited time, such as Magearna, Rotom, Eevee and Pichu, as well as a bunch of gigantamax Pokemon available via max raid battles. However, to celebrate this special occasion it’s only fitting for Pikachu to get the honor, since the adorable electric mouse has been the franchise’s mascot since 1996.

Unlike the endless Pikachu variants in Pokemon GO, the 25th anniversary Pikachu won’t feature any unique hats, other odd aesthetics, nor is it a shiny Pika; instead this Pikachu will come with the Sing move that is so closely tied to Jigglypuff in the Pokemon anime. This special Sing Pikachu will become available on February 25 via code distribution, and though no more information has been disclosed, it’ll likely be available for 30 days, like most Pokemon given out in this manner.

Sing is one of the oldest Pokemon moves, as it dates back to the original Red and Blue games (Red and Green in Japan). Although it’s not the first time a special event Pikachu has been given out with the move, it’s still a hard find considering the other Pikachu with Sing were Japanese exclusives dating back to the games’ fifth generation, Black and White.

In the broader scope of things, a special Pikachu with Sing is one of the smallest events taking place in the Pokemon universe, as the franchise’s 25th anniversary already boasts collaborations with Katy Perry, who’ll be releasing a Pokemon song; and also a Pokemon virtual concert starring Post Malone on February 27.

On the gaming side of things there’s also a new region in Pokemon Snap which will release this spring, as well as ever present rumor that the company will release yet another remake of an older title, in this case Diamond and Pearl. With Pokemon Day only a couple of weeks from now, there are probably a few more surprises left in store for fans.

The special event Sing Pikachu for Pokemon Sword and Shield will be available via code distribution on February 25, 2021.
