With the recent reveal of Pikmin 3 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch, the neglected Wii U has officially lost one of its final reasons to be on anyone’s shopping lists. It’s no secret that Nintendo’s last console was a financial failure, but the console has always been rather overlooked when it came to the exclusives it did have. Most of its titles weren’t worth buying a $300 system just to play, but those games were still fun and enjoyable in their own right. However, Nintendo’s insistence of porting the console’s entire library to the Switch has pushed the Wii U even further into obscurity.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was available one month after the Switch released and it proved to Nintendo that the Wii U’s library was absolutely profitable if it were to be sold on successful hardware. The game still stands as one of the company’s best selling Switch titles with over 20 million units sold. When considering that all that was needed to be done for this port was to make it run properly on their new console and add a few extra features, it’s likely Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Switch port is one of their most profitable releases of all time.
Nintendo has since dropped Wii U port after Wii U port hoping to repeat Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s sucess. Some of the Wii U’s biggest hitters like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, Pokkén Tournament, Breath of the Wild and Hyrule Warriors have all been ported to the Switch with additional content or enhanced visuals, making them the definitive versions of these games. Pikmin 3 was one of the last remaining highly-praised Wii U titles to be exclusive to the device, which will change once its flashy new Switch port arrives.
The Wii U Is Basically Abandoned Hardware
Most of the remaining Wii U exclusives have sequels that are considered anywhere from equivalent to superior on the Switch as well. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate effectively erased what was left of the Super Smash Bros. For Wii U scene, and fans of Splatoon and Super Mario Maker have access to great sequels on the Switch that offer loads of new features that were unavailable in their Wii U prequels. Paper Mario: The Origami King has its fair share of mixed opinions, but has been received much better than Paper Mario: Color Splash. There are also games like The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Yoshi’s Wolly World which all are available on other, more competent platforms that are both cheaper and offer a much larger lineup of quality exclusives.
Ultimately, the only true exclusives that the Wii U has are games like Super Mario 3D World, Star Fox Zero, and Xenoblade Chronicles X, as well as the virtual console. Super Mario 3D World and Xenoblade Chronicles X are quality games but have strong alternatives already available on the Switch or other platforms, and Star Fox Zero is far too similar to Star Fox 64 for most people to really care about it. Super Mario 3D World is also particularly likely to receive the deluxe treatment itself, and most people aren’t foaming at the mouth to play Nintendo Land.
There’s also the Nintendo Switch Online service and the 3DS virtual console, which offers players most of the classic Nintendo experiences they’re looking for (minus Nintendo 64 titles). The Wii U had a strong list of exclusives despite being a flop, but now that one of the system’s final stellar titles, Pikmin 3, has joined the ranks of its deluxe brethren, the Wii U will forever appeal only to hardcore Nintendo collectors.
