Throughout its history, Pixar has created a plethora of amazing characters from Woody and Buzz Lightyear to Sulley and WALL-E. Every Pixar movie seems to have some brilliant characters that bring both comedic elements and emotional tones.

However, the brilliance of Pixar is that there are tons of fantastic supporting characters that really flesh out the films and make them incredibly exciting. But with so much going on in every movie, there are always a few characters that fall by the wayside.

So, within this list we shall take a look at those characters that bring tons to each movie but don’t get the mainstream credit they deserve, ranking 10 of Pixar’s most underrated characters of all time.

10 King Fergus (Brave)

Pixar The 10 Most Underrated Characters Ranked

Brave is perhaps one of Pixar’s most underrated movies in general as the company took a stab at a princess film, giving it a new and modern twist. While Merida was obviously the highlight of the movie who got all the focus as it is her adventure, it is her father who is the unsung hero of this movie.

He consistently brings out amazing one-liners by being the classic father. He doesn’t just support his children, which sometimes leads to conflicts with his wife, which are done in a very funny manner. He has no problem mixing it up physically and brings some emotion as well in what is an excellent voice-over performance from Billy Connolly.

9 Art (Monsters University)

Pixar The 10 Most Underrated Characters Ranked

Monsters University opened up the monster world even more than Monsters Inc, showcasing even more characters than before. While Mike and Sulley were once again the lead roles that were focused upon, it was the rest of the Oozma Kampa group that really stole the show.

Every character brought something totally different to the movie, but the pick of the bunch was Art. He brought a hippie style attitude to the movie, which suited the university feel of the plot and allowed him to exercise so much free speech that made his character consistently hilarious.

8 Emile (Ratatouille)

Pixar The 10 Most Underrated Characters Ranked

Ratatouille is a fantastic Pixar movie and while Remy and Linguini are a brilliant odd-pair together that brings a lot of joy to the movie, Emille is just as good. He might play the comedic sidekick throughout the film, but Remy’s cousin also brings a lot of emotion as well.

He is an incredibly funny character that offers a lot of laughs, but because of his family connection to Remy, it helps bring a balance to the lead role. It reminds Remy there is a whole family waiting for him, and Emille is eventually them all together.

7 Mama Imelda Rivera (Coco)

Pixar The 10 Most Underrated Characters Ranked

Coco was an absolute smash success for Pixar upon its release and has proven to be one of the best animation movies of all time. It offers an amazing blend of excitement, adventure and unbelievable emotion all wrapped together with stunning animation and fantastic music.

There’s also a wide variety of characters in this film, but one that sometimes goes underrated is Mama Imelda Rivera. She brings a fiery passion to this movie that is unmatched by any character, adding some romance, aggression and humor along the way.

6 Hopper (A Bug’s Life)

Pixar The 10 Most Underrated Characters Ranked

It’s not easy being the bad guy in any movie because they’re not the fan favorite it is easy for them to be overlooked and underappreciated. This is very much true for Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, where Hopper is certainly underrated in terms of what he brings to the film.

Because Flik and the circus of insects are so full of personality, Hopper’s role in the film can be undervalued. However, any good movie has to have a strong villain to bring things together, and Hopper is one of the best Pixar has ever created.

5 Dash/Violet (The Incredibles/The Incredibles 2)

Pixar The 10 Most Underrated Characters Ranked

The Incredibles franchise is one of Pixar’s absolute greatest with some amazing action scenes being mixed amazingly with the love and emotion of a good family movie. But while Mr. and Mrs. Incredible get tons of attention, Dash and Violet often go under the radar.

Frozone is heavily hyped and even Jack-Jack gets some major scenes, especially in the sequel. However, the two young children bring tons of fun to the movie with their incredibly different personalities, and they equally deserve the plaudits.

4 Dug (Up)

Pixar The 10 Most Underrated Characters Ranked

Up is very much the Carl and Russell story, and that is fine because their unique relationship and heartwarming story make them both tremendous lead characters. However, the movie really takes on a new life when Dug is introduced to the film.

He has so much personality and excitement that it is hard not to love this character. Dug is certainly popular, with his love of squirrel’s entertaining everyone. But he is severely underrated in comparison to other characters from the movie.

3 Marlin (Finding Nemo/Dory)

Pixar The 10 Most Underrated Characters Ranked

Considering the fact that Marlin is one of the main characters in both of these movies, it might seem strange to claim that he is underrated, but the clownfish really is. Everyone talks about Nemo or Dory from these films, with the likes of Crush and Bruce also being popular.

However, Marlin often gets overlooked. Sure, he’s a little bit overprotective, but he is just a concerned father looking to do good by his son. He goes above and beyond to get Nemo back and the actual adventure part of the original movie is all him.

2 Hamm (Toy Story-Toy Story 4)

Pixar The 10 Most Underrated Characters Ranked

It’s quite hard to pick an underrated character within the Toy Story franchise, simply because Pixar really has done a great job throughout all four movies of making this ensemble cast all feel important. However, out of all the characters, it is Hamm that gets the least attention from people.

He is one of the grumpier characters, but people often look to Mr. Potato Head instead of Hamm. However, this money box brings out some amazing one-liners and really is a character that connects with the adult audiences, in particular, which is perhaps why he doesn’t get as much attention as others.

1 Fear (Inside Out)

The emotion characters from Inside Out are really brilliant, all offering something totally different to the movie in their unique manner. However, because it is Joy and Sadness who take the main adventure, the other trio of emotions often get forgotten about.

That’s a shame as they are all absolutely hilarious, but it is Fear who really steals the movie. This character is constantly on edge, which is expected, but the mannerisms and the way the character is pieced together just makes him incredibly enjoyable to watch.
