Google made sure to equip the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro with just about every feature imaginable, one of which is an always-on display. With every Pixel that’s come out before the Pixel 6 series, it’s always felt like Google never quite got things right. The Pixel 2 was a considerable upgrade over the first generation, yet the XL model suffered from a really poor OLED panel. The Pixel 4 was supposed to be a significant evolution of the Pixel family, but gimmicky features and unbelievably bad battery left held it back from greatness.

With the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, Google finally got all of the major components right. Great displays? Check. Dependable battery life? Yep. Excellent cameras, enjoyable software, and years of updates? Yes, to all of the above. Even better, Google managed to nail all of these things while also staying competitive on price. At $599 for the Pixel 6 and $899 for the Pixel 6 Pro, these are also two of the year’s best Android values on the market. There’s a lot to like.

One of the many features of the Pixel 6/6 Pro is an always-on display. When the feature is off, turning off the display does precisely that — turn off the entire display. However, enabling the always-on mode will still show some important info even when the screen is technically ‘off.’ Here’s how to turn it on: Open the Settings app, tap ‘Display,’ tap ‘Lock screen,’ and tap the toggle next to ‘Always show time and info.’

What You Can Do With Pixel 6’s Always-On Display

With this mode enabled, pressing the lock button to turn off the screen no longer completely turns it off. Instead, it’ll now persistently show the date, time, weather, and icons for any available notifications. Below the time is also the fingerprint sensor icon. Instead of having to press the power button and then put their finger on the sensor, users can now just put their finger on that area to unlock the phone with one less step. And, last but not least, the bottom of the screen shows the current percentage of the Pixel 6’s battery life.

Enabling the always-on display on the Pixel 6 is a great way to add extra functionality without much work. The only potential downside is that it does increase the phone’s battery usage since the screen is always running. Should someone be in a situation where they need to extend battery life as much as possible, it may be worth disabling the always-on display. To do this, simply follow the same instructions above and disable the ‘Always show time and info’ toggle.
