Scalebound, for those who weren’t around to remember, was an action RPG that was in development by PlatinumGames for the Xbox One. Although it received quite a bit of hype when it was first revealed in 2014, the game was eventually canceled in 2017. Details of the cancellation were never really disclosed, but it’s something that PlatinumGames and game director Hideki Kamiya have expressed sincere regret over.

And now they seem to be expressing a sincere desire to revisit Scalebound. In an interview with IGN Japan, PlatinumGames’ new president Atsushi Inaba said that Kamiya “has been talking about wanting to work on Scalebound again for a while.”

“I’d like to appeal to Phil Spencer directly,” Kamiya replied. “Let’s do it, Phil!”

And just to make sure that Phil didn’t think they were joking, Inaba added: “Often in an interview you might hear a developer politely saying, ‘Yes, if we had the opportunity we’d love to work on that again’, but we don’t mean it that way. Both Kamiya and I are serious – we really would love to work on Scalebound again. I’d like to discuss it with Microsoft properly.”

Kamiya noted that Scalebound “had progressed a fair way” before its cancellation, “and it seems pointless for Microsoft to just hold on to that and not do anything with it.

“Phil! Phil!” Kamiya shouted in English. “Let’s do it together!”

This isn’t the first time PlatinumGames has appealed to Phil to restart development on Scalebound. In 2020, Kamiya directed disappointed fans to write to Phil directly to see if public outcry could restart development.

Scalebound might just be PlatinumGames’ biggest failure. Late last year, Kamiya apologized directly to Microsoft and disappointed fans for technical issues that cropped up during Scalebound’s development, specifically mentioning Unreal Engine and a lack of “necessary know-how to build a game based on online features.”

Platinum seems to think they’ve gained that know-how in recent years as the company now plans to break into live-service games.
