A Battle Royale mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare seems all but inevitable now, as a newfound glitch in the game supports initial leaks reported through data miners. These leaks surfaced in November and as always were discovered within the PC files of the game, referencing “BR”, which is likely meant to signify the battle royale genre.

There was nothing to follow in the wake of these initial leaks, and since developers often include all sorts of placeholder files within their games for possible but not guaranteed future use, the leaks were taken with a grain of salt. However, some have recently found an in-game bug that takes the leak to a new level, giving access to an entire map featuring the same locations and assets referenced in the leak. A video of the map was posted online by Reddit user Nateberg3, who shows the map as large and already well developed.

Combined with previous rumors, battle royale looks to be released in 2020 as a free-to-play mode. Though despite all these leaks that have come from the PC files, Activision has not said anything on the matter.

On the one hand, the battle royale genre has become so popular that it almost seems strange for a massive franchise like Call of Duty not to jump in with its own version. On the other hand, the genre has become saturated with entrants and a developer would need to truly offer something unique and interesting to lure players away.

One rumor from November that would be truly innovative in the genre related to the Gulag prison that can be seen in the map. Data miner Senescallo posted the following description about a respawn mechanic:

“To respawn a teammate, obtain a Respawn Token, then drop their body near an Ambulance. Once the body is dropped at the Ambulance, the player will enter the Gulag queue for a chance to win a 1v1 and respawn into the match. At some point during the match, the Gulag will be closed and no longer usable, thus preventing respawns.”

If accurate, players would break from the traditional one-and-done gameplay that ends a match as soon as a player dies. The potential for comeback plays in a Battle Royale becomes far more interesting if a defeated player earns the opportunity to come back to life, determined by a show of skill by defeating another player in a 1v1 scenario. At the very least it would make for some great esports entertainment.

If the mode is indeed free-to-play, that will at least be a good jumping point for a Call off Duty Battle Royale mode, and like Fortnite, would be monetizing its game through the use of the sale of cosmetic items and a Battle Pass of some type. There is always the possibility that microtransactions will increase a player’s overall power within the game, though such pay-to-win mechanics would seal the fate of the game rather quickly and kill any potential player base from emerging.

For now we still need to wait and see if the mode is coming in 2020, but each of these leaks bolsters the idea of the mode being a reality.
