Sony’s The Future of Gaming Stream last week was applauded for showing off countless games running on the PlayStation 5. There was plenty for fans to see including several PlayStation exclusives which are “more important than ever” according to one of the system’s developers.

While not all the games presented were exclusives, Sony made sure to emphasize those that were including Horizon 2: Forbidden West and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. But several other games shown will either go to PC as well or be completely multi-platform.

Even though Sony has held true concerning the exclusive format, the idea has become more of a rarity in recent years. Microsoft has said their goal is to have their games playable on any device. They have leaned more toward the idea of streaming games, with many of their exclusives appearing on Xbox Game Pass.

But Sony has kept to the idea that exclusives are important. Their library has been impressive for many years and they’re building a strong cast of characters that will always be associated with PlayStation. Exclusives also allow for developers to take advantage of PlayStation’s specific hardware and make games that will run best on that specific console.

Simon Rutter, PlayStation’s EVP for Europe, said that exclusives are still “hugely important. More important, I think, than they’ve ever been. Through their proximity to the system’s designers, PlayStation’s studios are able to really extract the most out of the system performance and that’s a really valuable attribute for a platform holder to have.”

Indie developers have seen these benefits when working with PlayStation as well. Sony is no stranger when it comes to highlighting upcoming indie titles. They had a large presence during The Future of Gaming, are seen regularly during State of Play presentations, and even had a large presence when Sony still appeared at E3. This gives indies the attention they deserve and even if they are multi-platform, fans will be more encouraged to purchase them on a PlayStation console.

Exclusives will probably be just as important when the PlayStation 5 launches this holiday season. They’ve created an identity for the console throughout its generations and while they can be a bit pricey, as long as the quality stays high, fans will continue playing and enjoying them.
